EU’S INTENDED BAN ON UNDER-16s FROM SOCIAL MEDIA: PERFORMATIVE SANCTIMONY
Lawmakers in the European Parliament have voted overwhelmingly for stricter rules that would prevent children under 16 from accessing social media, AI chatbots, and video-sharing platforms. The non-binding report passed with 483 votes in favour, 92 against, and 86 abstentions, according to Parliament.
The resolution highlights growing evidence that minors are struggling with digital overload and displaying problematic smartphone habits that mirror addiction. It argues that these patterns are being fuelled by platform features designed to keep users hooked, including autoplaying videos, endless feeds, and personalised recommendations. Their call to action therefore includes banning the most addictive designs and disabling other habit-forming features for minors to prevent harm.
However, in view of this, the European Union is displaying acts of performative hypocrisy and moral inconsistency, as its own direct policies are a main cause of corruption. The European Parliament had earlier adopted a resolution condemning public discrimination and speeches against LGBTI people, even in “non-LGBTI zones”.
Furthermore, Parliament has firmly denounced the fact that some schools in certain member states are prevented by public authorities from fulfilling their role of promoting fundamental rights and protecting LGBTI people. The EU’s narrative that sex education must include teaching young people about relationships based on gender equality, consent, and mutual respect is, in its bid to foster and support LGBTI perspectives, arguably one of the most vociferous and raucous forms of corruption and malfeasance—more so than smartphones.
The EU is therefore advised to desist from such self-contradicting manoeuvres in order to preserve its reputation. Neglecting to teach young people about gender until they grow up is a highly abhorred and vilified practice that bolsters cronyism.
