Just scanned and visualised Long Meg, Cumbria. 🤔
There are five circular motifs carved on the stone... not just the three that are visible (one is a spiral!). I believe there was a previous study that suspected five, but would say 100%...
I repeat. We *do not* have a problem in the UK with the so-called "far-right".
We do, however, have a VERY serious problem with a highly organised, dangerous, well-funded, well-connected, unhinged, and extremely violent far-left.
@BobKelly16 So because I think the Irish football captain should have shaken the Israeli football captain's hand, it means I am "OK with shooting children in the head"? Do you have any idea how mental you sound?
What a night of speedway! @ruthlesslambert deserves all the credit for winning in Tourn and being crowned World speedway champion for the first time. Really enjoyed the series and working with @ollyallen on comms.
Thanks to Mayfield for putting on a fabulous show.
This is such hogwash.
If soils were depleted of nutrients, yields would be falling. They aren't. I am not sure where this commonly-held idea comes from but my guess is that it's from regenerative ag's pop ecology notion that soils should be able to supply all the nutrients crops need without fertilizer inputs.
No wonder the public thinks badly of ag; they are fed these lies from sources that should be trustworthy but aren't.
Please listen, my take on SFI.
This is not my usual happy, positive farming video. This is reality. I’ve said that as farmers we must share the good, the bad and the ugly. This is bad and ugly. Stakeholders, government body’s from both sides of the house should hand their heads in shame as to the shit show farming is becoming. People WILL go out of business over this. Our colleagues will suffer and fall because of this. If your mate calls you to chat, pick the phone up no matter what you’re doing and just chat. Remember about all the good farming charity’s out there. FCN, RABI to name a few.
Please share with MPs and associates. Please also speak up
@essexwindyfarm@cutlerstom@vickihird@FWAbiKay I just applied for the low input grassland option, and got my application in at 10.10 in the morning, though I had been on my phone since 8.30 trying.
Here is a leader from @Countrylifemag on how wonderful sheep are for humanity and the environment, plus our health and our history. Shall we just say that the writer and I have walked some of the same (sheep) paths and are well-known to each other ? ;) #sheep#farming
Such a lot of nonsense being stated about a ‘mandate’ for another independence referendum. Swinney set out his own threshold in the Election campaign and failed to meet it. The SNP secured 38% of votes cast on a 53% turnout. 1 in 5 of the population isn’t a mandate.
You heard that Juan Perón destroyed Argentina's economy, but what actually happened?
Perón nationalized Argentina's central bank in March 1946 and handed price-setting power over beef and wheat exports to a state agency called IAPI. That single move strangled the two industries that fed the country.
IAPI bought grain from farmers at prices it set, then sold that grain on world markets at actual prices, pocketing the spread. Farmers received roughly half the international price for wheat throughout the late 1940s. They responded the only rational way: they planted less. Cattle ranchers faced identical incentives and reduced their herds. Argentina's beef exports fell from 400,000 tons in 1946 to under 200,000 tons by 1952.
The central bank nationalization meant Perón controlled credit allocation directly. He flooded industry with cheap loans while agriculture starved of capital. Foreign exchange reserves accumulated before 1946 were gone by 1952.
The price signal is the only tool an economy has to communicate scarcity and opportunity across millions of producers simultaneously. Suppress that signal in two of your most productive sectors and output collapses.
By 1955, when the military removed Perón, Argentina's share of world wheat trade had collapsed from a dominant position to near irrelevance. A country that once fed Europe had engineered its own agricultural decline through deliberate, economically illiterate, socialist policy.
Can’t we just close Holyrood down and agree it was all just a terrible expensive mistake? Look at the state of this — and this guy thinks he should be first minister!
From a recent paper: "There is now overwhelming evidence for the destructive effects of the industrial model of agriculture on Earth’s life-support systems."
What we all need to recognize is that ALL models of crop production that will actually feed us have these destructive effects - it's how crops are grown.
The worst thing about agriculture is its use of land. Whether conventional, no-till, organic, or agroecological-regenerative, the biodiversity lost from initially clearing land for crops far outweighs any differences in farming systems.
And what is a measure of land use efficiency? Yield. High yield=high land use efficiency for cropping.
The High Arctic has had its coldest summer since records began. Britain has had its warmest. That is what happens when cold northern air and warm southern air don't mix as well as usual for random reasons.
Let's play a game of 'guess where Ben's money is invested?'
("BNG, ELM, carbon, natural flood management, nutrient neutrality, nature tourism")
Once again pretending upland farms are unfamiliar with diversification, and misleading people with the lsheep monoculture' bollocks
