How did we as a society allow our self-worth to be so strongly tied to our achievements?

Somewhere along the road, we forgot that a successful life is not necessarily one full of riches & accolades. A successful life is one spent in a state of happiness & contentment.

Most of us would agree that babies are worthy of love, even if they haven’t “earned” it. At what point did we decide when that love becomes conditional? You are no less deserving of love today as you were when you were a newborn. You are the very same soul as you once were 💗

@albasakut Agree w/ the rationale of security etc - understandable. but the industries I mentioned *did* exist 20 yrs ago. There is still a clear preference in Muslim communities for vocational career paths (medicine etc). The game is changing, let’s see if the mindset changes with it 🙏🏼

Limiting your child to a list of “respectable” paths, as well intentioned as this may be, is inadvertently removing the next generation of Muslims from the narrative. Letting go of this mindset will open up opportunity for better diversity & representation across all industries.

For me, one of the key takeaways from the #thetrojanhorseaffair podcast is this: please STOP pushing your children down “traditional” career paths. Allow them to pursue their interests & use their talents. We need Muslim representation in media, government, tech, film, etc.

One of the most valuable things companies can do for retention is to spend time understanding employees’ motivations. Once you know their priorities & reasons for being there, you can tailor their experience accordingly. If you don’t meet their expectations, they will leave.

@iamSaira Yes, and that’s definitely not to dismiss anyone else’s hard work and effort to get into these fields. It’s just that, for some, it can be difficult to figure out how to find a career we’re happier in!

People give a lot of attention to how challenging it is to get into medicine. For me, getting out of medicine was so much harder.

@httpsyongss That’s a toughie! I would say don’t worry about other people thinking it’s a phase, you know yourself best and need to do what’s right & best for *you*. Having said that, I don’t regret going to medical school, I’m glad I did it & finished it and now I’m moving on. Wish you luck!
