For decades, Rep. Adams has been a champion for Black communities and working families. Known as the “Godmother of HBCUs,” she has led efforts in Congress to protect and expand funding for historically Black colleges and universities while continuing her lifelong commitment to education.
A former educator, city council member, and state legislator, Rep. Adams has built her career around what she calls the 4 H’s: healthcare, hunger, housing, and higher education. In Congress, she has also been a leading voice addressing the maternal health crisis as co-founder of the Black Maternal Health Caucus and a champion of the Momnibus legislation to support mothers and families.

🚨 RACE TO WATCH 🚨 Higher Heights PAC is naming the U.S. House of Representatives race in Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District as a 2026 Race to Watch. A Race to Watch highlights contests where two or more Black women are stepping forward to lead.
In this race, Donna Miller, a Cook County Commissioner, and Yumeka Brown, a Commissioner on the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago Board, are both candidates in the Democratic primary for the U.S. House of Representatives on March 17.
As the 2026 election cycle takes shape, IL-02 reflects the continued presence of Black women competing at every level of the ballot and shaping the future of representation across the state.
