Yesterday marked the beginning of Canada Road Safety Week, which runs through the 18th of May.
This campaign is built around the behaviours we encounter on a daily basis and are known to be the leading causes of fatal and serious injury collisions.
These include impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving and failing to wear seatbelts. Every stop made, every impaired driver removed from the road, every compliance check completed contributes to lives saved.
Please get to where you're going safely and have an enjoyable long weekend.

#LeedsOPP PC Mason was invited to read to a local classroom today, on #WorldReadAloudDay. Creating connections through reading, questions and storytelling is shown to benefit a youth's natural development, and can have lasting impacts on how they perceive law enforcement.

A joint initiative by the East Region OPP and Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) this week checked nearly 600 commercial vehicles. Officials were looking for mechanical defects, improper paperwork, impaired drivers and anything else which could potentially impact the safety of everyone on Ontario’s roads and highways.
From Monday, August 25th to Thursday, August 28th, MTO and OPP officers:
•Conducted 596 visual inspections
•Conducted 24 detailed CVSA inspections
•Conducted nine tow truck inspections
•Conducted 69 mandatory alcohol screening tests on random drivers (no violations)
•Took four commercial vehicles out of service
•Issued nine tickets for various infractions, including a lack of pre-trip inspections, no or improper insurance, major defects and hours of service.
Officers also caught nine commercial vehicles using a secondary road to bypass the MTO inspection facility on the 401. In one of these incidents, a total of nine charges were laid against a company and the driver. That vehicle was taken out of service.
“This was tremendous work by officers from both the OPP and MTO. We all share a responsibility when it comes to highway safety, but commercial drivers carry an even greater burden—given that the vehicles they operate can weigh over 40,000 kilograms, or 40 tons.” — Acting Superintendent Stephan Neufeld, OPP East Region Headquarters @ONtransport
