The tendendcy to anthropomorphize LLMs has the concurrent effect of mechanizing the human. When AI optimists claim an LLM "understands" it a) ascribes human understanding to the LLM and b) claims human understanding is nothing more than algorithmic token prediction.

It is still a human-centric activity. The risk of "deflating" AI understanding by such comparisons runs the risk of applying it to practically all of modern science - who is to say our current theories will not one day be considered like the Babylonian astronomer?
