There are a lot of assumptions about what it’s like to work at VA.
The reality is different than many expect, especially for early-career clinicians looking for meaningful work, strong teams, and opportunities to grow.

Dr. Eller research focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying chronic pain following spinal cord injury (SCI) and identifying novel therapeutic interventions. Chronic pain is consistently rated as one of the most debilitating and persistent complaints among individuals with SCI. Although opioids are commonly prescribed to manage SCI-related pain, they have contributed to opioid misuse disorders and can paradoxically worsen pain and delay recovery. We have found that SCI-induced mitochondrial dysfunction could be contributing to pain after SCI. Therefore, we are using repeated heat treatment, which is an effective approach for restoring mitochondrial function in other models, to determine if we can restore mitochondrial function after SCI in mice and reduce chronic pain. Ultimately, my goal is to identify safer and more effective treatments for SCI-associated pain in order to improve quality of life for individuals living with spinal cord injury. #SpinalCordInjury #ChronicPain #PainResearch #MitochondrialFunction #SCIRecovery #NeuroScience #PainManagement #TherapeuticResearch #SCIResearch #HealthInnovation
Our VA-funded research lab is dedicated to understanding why women who experience menopause face a higher risk of hepatic steatosis—excess fat storage in the liver that can lead to cardiovascular, liver, and metabolic diseases. We’re also exploring how estrogen treatment (hormone replacement therapy) may help address this condition. By focusing on liver mitochondria—the cell’s powerhouse—we aim to improve the metabolic health of the millions of women Veterans who have proudly served our nation, helping them enjoy longer, healthier lives after their service. #MenopauseResearch #HepaticSteatosis #LiverHealth #WomenVeterans #MetabolicHealth #HormoneReplacement #EstrogenTherapy #Mitochondria #VeteranHealth #WomenInScience
To ensure our women Veterans receive timely cervical cancer screenings, Truman VA’s Mobile Pap Team — comprised of three female gynecologists, two nurses, and the Women Veterans Program Manager — visited the Camdenton CBOC on April 23. The team offered 30 appointments and achieved a great turnout. This marked the first time a Pap clinic was held at the Camdenton CBOC. Thank you to the Camdenton staff for your support in making the day a success, and a special shout-out to Lorissa Duffy for stepping in as our third nurse! Each Veteran also received a resource bag to take home. We look forward to hosting another Pap Day in approximately six months at Truman VA and continuing to provide this mobile clinic annually.
