How did the colonial government forcefully initiate the collection of taxes in Kenya? One 1901 letter from Charles Eliot expounds on this very important point.
@MCCCANM@Sweetbriar The angle from which the video was taken can also affect our perception of the incident. I hope more video from different angles may become public because airshows have tons of spectators who record these demonstrations.
@pa_coyote94151@YouGotItToyota@MichaelARothman Through their articles of secession, many states spent ample ink explaining the real reasons for secession. I believe them at their word.
@tt_solomon254@Joshtety@ythera_ All cultures borrow (dressing, religious beliefs, food, etc) and the only one that wouldn't do are the ones without interactions with other cultures.
@nelcqcu@RealAirPower1 Immediately after hostilities ended, the USA did pretty thorough interviews with members of the military in Japan to gain their points of view. Those interviews are now public and can be found online.
@allenanalysis It certainly is a goldmine. I have been there many times researching the early history of the relationship between the USA and East Africa.
For example, that curious gift of 2 horses to Pres. Martin Van Buren from Sultan Seyyid Said of Zanzibar/Oman in 1840.
@KatarzynaMucha8@jurgen_nauditt In East Africa, we have "mpesa" which can be used with or without a bank account, if one wished so. Very heavily used for all sort of payments and no smartphone necessary.
@WanjiruNjoya Asking about the slavery trade on the Indian Ocean does not mean one cannot engage on the evils of it elsewhere. The same applies vice versa.
@Jeff_Davis1808@WanjiruNjoya My argument was strictly on Lee being an abolitionist or anti-slavery. He himself expressed his views on this topic pretty widely, and there is no ambiguity.
@WanjiruNjoya@Jeff_Davis1808 "a moral and political evil and he would see it end "
He went much further than that. Lee was comfortable with the institution carrying along during his lifetime and his views on the enslaved can't be confused with any empathy for them as human beings.
@WanjiruNjoya@Jeff_Davis1808 I don't doubt there were abolitionist in the south because human history doesn't have neat story lines. My point was strictly about Lee's views on this because going by his own writing, he was surely not an abolitionist.
