Kia ora #twitterstorians, I'm not on here much anymore but popping back to share the good news that my book Gender, Violence and Criminal Justice in the Colonial Pacific 1880-1920 is now open access, thanks to @waikato & @BloomsburyAcad

@UnitedKiwi@jitsnz I worked at the Royal Society at this time - Marsden has funded humanities and social sciences all along. The 2018 trial was simply testing different ways to select which grants got funded. It didn't change what subjects could be funded.
@UnitedKiwi@jitsnz I would also add that Marsden has been the one of, if not the main source for Humanities and Social Science funding. More widely NZ investment in research relative to GDP has long been well below OECD average.
@UnitedKiwi@jitsnz Marsden Fund ran a 2018 trial to see if there were more effective ways to evaluate proposals, given the process is an intensive one. The trial included the humanities, social sciences, economic & human behaviour subjects. These subjects have all been part of the fund for decades.
Gender, Violence and Criminal Justice in the Colonial Pacific: 1880-1920 by Kate Stevens uncovers the ways in which indigenous islanders, indentured labourers and other marginalized groups engaged with and transformed colonial legal practices.

I learned a lot and had great fun discussing animal and, in particular, penguin histories at the "Animal Histories" workshop at @MonashUni last night/this morning. Thanks to Rohan Howitt and @HistoryKateS for letting me participate remotely. #envhist 🐧🌊
