NEW: @mainstreamlbr endorses Lucy Powell for Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. In a special ballot, 82.2% of Mainstream members voted to endorse Lucy. Labour’s Mainstream wants the party and government to be reset in line with pluralist, democratic socialist values.
The cost of compensation is often cited as the main barrier to bringing water companies back into public ownership, with claims it could cost £90bn.
But this argument is built on major legal economic errors. Let’s break it down 🧵

@MunicipalDreams The redevelopment of the ‘Boot Estate’ under Labour transformed Norris Green rehousing local people, bringing more people and shops to the area; to the extent that no one refers to the ‘Boot Estate’ anymore which has been fully integrated into Ellergreen and Norris Green Village.
@MunicipalDreams Just to clarify - Cobalt was formed in 2003 comprising the Norris Green, Croxteth, & Sparrowhall Estates comprising approx 6,500 former council homes. The remaining 17,000 council dwellings transferred to LHM in 2008 and merged with Torus in 2019.
New on Substack, my second post on the Norris Green Estate in Liverpool, looking at how the estate has evolved since the 1970s and the brave new world of social housing that we now inhabit:

More about Dave Clay , who sadly passed away after the review was published, can be found on the Museum of Liverpool website with a rich history of inspirational black scousers’ as part of their Black History Month during October 2024.
Here we re-publish a review of Dave Clay’s book ‘A Liverpool Black History…’by Pete Cresswell from NorthWestHistoryJournal. Dave includes his experiences in the 1980’s Liverpool Militant era with the appointment of Sam Bond, a saga previously covered at https://t.co/i7xQLyCXrt
Keir is right to say there are more difficult decisions ahead.
I fear that for many voters they may find one of them is voting Labour.
Being anti Tory is not enough.

I definitely heard Wes Streeting @UKLabour say that the use of private health to clear the backlog should be controlled by the NHS through NHS waiting lists to avoid queue jumping & a 2 tier system developing - that’s not ‘dumping’.
If you dump *millions* of patients onto this tiny, understaffed private sector, all that will happen is that it will collapse in a spectacular fashion. It wouldn't be able to cope.
The capacity does not exist. Period. End of story. Labour's plan is a non-starter, and it'll fail.
How many millions will we pay to private builders to build more council housing- get real - it will take years to build public capacity as an alternative to private provision.
Tories handing £250 million to private firms this morning for private hospital beds.
It is fair to point out that the Tories closed 22,000 NHS Beds.
Running the NHS down to justify handing your money to health profiteers.
Starmer ditches pledge to end NHS outsourcing.
If private sector is used to reduce NHS queues, pay it only the NHS cost i.e. low cost, no profit.
As due to Tory neglect NHS has low capacity, why not nationalize private hospitals? Will end profiteering.

Yes but Wes Streeting is right to say we have to use private health controlled by the NHS to cut the backlog and prevent a 2 tier system- similarly you can’ t build more Council homes quickly without local Councils using private builders - as in Liverpool in the 1980s.
£150 billion of NHS money has been handed over to non-NHS providers since 2010.
The NHS is on its knees. Waiting lists have trebled.
Private health doesn’t cut waiting lists, they siphon taxpayers’ money & hand it to shareholders.
Renationalise the NHS.
Really, Wes Streeting @UKLabour says that private health must be controlled THROUGH the NHS to clear backlogs & prevent 2 systems. Similarly more council housing can be built THROUGH control by local councils but most will be built by private companies as in Liverpool in 1980s.
As you open your gas bills today, please bear in mind that wholesale gas today is about a quarter of the price it was at the end of August.
You are being robbed and scammed by energy firms.
