Today a Planned Parenthood Health Center in Fort Myers was attacked by anti-abortion extremists & hours later FL lawmakers pushed forward HB5, the 15 week abortion ban. Floridians who traveled to testify were unable to speak. We will keep fighting to protect reproductive freedom.

@murap_iaar Why don't we see many old women in film? Why do we see so much discourse online about what generation is morally better when the real problem is not a person's age but their attitudes towards race, gender, etc?
@murap_iaar Even though my research corroborates a lot of what has already been said about age and US gender norms in the late 18th / early 19th century, I hope that it could at least serve as a catalyst for us wondering how age impacts the way that we see certain women.
@murap_iaar But these women do not lack authority over themselves! That is just their natural bodies. Old women's authority should be respected regardless if their skin is smooth or wrinkled.
@murap_iaar Male practitioners wanted women to defer to their authority and adhere to gender norms. But many older women did not necessarily perfectly adhere to these expectations. Lower-class women's folk practices were often associated with superstition and treated with ridicule.
@murap_iaar In terms of authority, practitioners had a very paradoxical view of old women in the medical realm. They could praise their participation in one article and disparage it in the next.
@murap_iaar I also created a category to document positive and negative references to trained medical practitioners and domestic / folk practitioners. I derived my analysis of authority using this information.
@murap_iaar I made sure to also pay attention to extraneous details that do not relate to the patients' condition, and information about race and social class.
