I am extremely grateful to the Blue Security team tonight.

An hour ago, while sleeping with my kids, I heard something in the ceiling. I fumigate every six months because I live at the bottom of a nature valley,a beautiful ecosystem, but it means rats and all sorts of creatures make their way around. I know the sound of little feet; this wasn’t that. This was heavier… almost a slithering or dragging sound. It felt wrong.

After five minutes of listening, I pressed the panic button and called Blue Security. While I was whispering to the operator (because my kids were asleep next to me), the movement stopped. That silence was honestly worse.

When the officers arrived, I faced another horrible decision: if I opened my bedroom door to go unlock the upstairs gate, I’d have to walk past the ceiling entry point ,the exact area where someone could have been waiting. But if I didn’t open, the guards could only enter the yard, not the house.

I’ve been in many dangerous, adrenaline-inducing situations in my life. I’ve always been surprisingly calm, maybe because I watch too much violent television and have desensitised myself, or maybe it’s my ADHD and the way my brain handles crises. Tonight I was still calm… but the only thing I was truly afraid of was my babies being harmed.

I keep one small defensive weapon near me at night, but I’d taken a bad fall yesterday and my body is too sore to fight anyone off. So I made peace with the idea that if I encountered someone, I’d just talk and beg them to take whatever they wanted and go.

Thankfully, there was nobody there. The team searched everything thoroughly.

The truth is, there isn’t much more I can add to my security setup unless I start installing death lasers or something. I already have everything that can reasonably be installed.

This is why we need to solve unemployment and crime as a matter of absolute urgency in this country.

I’m remembering how, during my maintenance application, the magistrate questioned why I included security expenses for the home where the kids live. I had to calmly explain that in South Africa private security isn’t a luxury. It’s survival.

And I’m thinking about people who don’t have armed response as an option. Fuck!

Years ago, before I had children, I lived in an apartment. Someone contorted themselves through burglar bars to steal my TV. I called SAPS; they arrived the next afternoon, didn’t take prints, and casually told me they had seen “pharas” do this before. From that day on, private security became as essential to me as medical aid.

Every country has crime. But the constant hum of anxiety we live with in South Africa even in safe neighbourhoods makes it almost impossible to ever truly relax.
