Why do socialists want to end the nuclear family, the only social unit where socialism actually works?
@haugejostein The "city run by communists" label is accurate in terms of political control, but incomplete as an economic explanation. The visible modernity came from a system that deliberately harnessed profit motives under Party oversight, not from rejecting them.
@ultimate_soviet@Rakeshhkumaar I think you misunderstood my answer. You asked "Do you live here?" I replied, "No, I don't live there [wherever you are]. I live here [which happens to be Tennessee, USA]."
@ultimate_soviet@Rakeshhkumaar No, I don't live there. I live here.
In any case, it doesn't matter where I live. A US citizen's income is taxed anywhere it's earned, a feature shared only with Eritrea, although I doubt foreign banks report on Eritrean nationals with the same urgency they comply with US law.
@AlanRMacLeod The Vietnamese government owns all land "on behalf of the people," but most buildings on the land are owned privately. State owned enterprises output 25% of total GDP. I was there recently -- a lot of hustling entrepreneurs in a one-party country that calls itself communist.
@nxt888 The US thought the USSR had a "domino" strategy to topple the so-called "free world" with communist totalitarianism. The French got the US to intervene on that premise. In truth, it was a nationalist movement that took Soviet assistance, but not its governance. Now, nobody cares.
@heterogeneman@IMPERATORAUS Be nice if we could apply your terms to the native-born as well, except they won't need to be cast out. Without the state-provided fruits of other people's labor, they'd leave voluntarily.
@MKjrstad@LynAldenContact Yes. The ability to inflate away debt is why I don't think a balanced budget amendment would do much to limit spending. In fact, over the last several decades it seems like the inflation tax has become the preferred method to pay for our inflated government.
@MKjrstad@LynAldenContact I think people should transact in whatever medium they agree on. But now the government's so grasping that, technically, if I tutor your kids in exchange for you doing my taxes, we're supposed to report the "fair market" USD value of those activities to the IRS.
@hendershot_jon@JulieBorowski Or removing all entitlements, bailouts, etc., and see who wants to come solely for the right to work their asses off and keep what they earn. For that matter, how many native drains on the public purse might migrate elsewhere?
@MKjrstad@LynAldenContact Other problems with this thesis:
*GDP is a made-up number that includes government spending.
*Balanced budget mandates are easily eluded in a fiat legal tender.
*If we don't elect representatives with the stones to say "no" to CONSTITUENTS, no legal gimmick stops the spending.
@MKjrstad@LynAldenContact Passing a law takes more than five minutes. This proposal requires a constitutional amendment, which takes months or years. Both require the concurrence of the very Congress they are meant to rein in.
@ChinaPatriot99@baldguymoney Selling US dollars & Treasuries buys time. But the only thing that will save any currency is for the government that issues it to stop borrowing and cut expenses. Gold used to provide that discipline. Maybe it will again.
@porterstansb We already have the Tenth Amendment. Do we need to turn the Constitution into an ever growing catalog of forbidden transgressions each time the federal government assumes an authority it was never given?
