Just hours ago, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled in favor of a near-total abortion ban that was first enacted by the state in 1864 — that’s eighteen-sixty-four, with an 'eight' — making it a felony to perform or assist in obtaining an abortion.
While this archaic law is going to hurt many pregnant Arizonans in the short term, it seems likely that voters in the state will have the opportunity to repeal it in November via a ballot initiative enshrining abortion as a constitutional right, and Arizona’s Democratic attorney general has already publicly commented saying her office will not seek to prosecute people under this law.
'I'm devastated by this decision and I know that many Arizonans are as well,’ Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) said in public remarks of her own.
In total, 21 states currently ban abortion or restrict it earlier in the pregnancy compared to the standard established by Roe v. Wade.
AOC rightfully points out on CNN that the unprecedented thing about former President Trump being in this much legal trouble aren't the investigations, but Trump's criminality
Yesterday, the UCP introduced Bill 8, which will remove the $200 cap on gifts to elected officials.
I have to tell you in my time as an MLA I’ve never had a constituent complain that they couldn’t give me a more expensive gift.
During this conflict, President Biden has:
- repeatedly insisted that Palestinians civilians are not to blame and must be protected
- successfully gotten the Israelis to delay their ground invasion of Gaza
- negotiated the opening of a vital humanitarian corridor of aid to Gaza via Egypt
- provided $100 million in aid to Gaza
- currently calling for a temporary ceasefire
The far-left has basically hallucinated an alternative reality where none of these things has happened, where Biden has excitedly encouraged the worst excesses of the Israeli response to October 7. What Biden has actually done, in the context of dealing with a prime minister like Netanyahu, is pretty impressive, IMO, and he deserves credit for it.
