A petition is urging Congress to preserve federal protections for wild horses and donkeys under the Bureau of Land Management’s care.

A proposed federal budget would reduce funding for the Wild Horse and Burro Program by about $37 million and omit longstanding restrictions on killing healthy animals or selling them for slaughter.

Supporters warn the changes could put tens of thousands of animals at risk. They are calling on Congress to preserve the restrictions and fund nonlethal methods, including fertility control.

Wild horses captured in Nevada. When the gate closes, dozens of horses are trapped shoulder-to-shoulder inside a metal enclosure; then panic erupts. There is nowhere to go but up. It is a great disgrace the horses are slautered. Stop this
