For more than three decades, Somaliland has existed in diplomatic limbo, governing itself effectively while the international community looked away. In this opinion piece, Mohamud A. Ahmed argues that Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland shatters this “carefully managed ambiguity,” forcing a shift from polite euphemism to strategic reality.

He explains that Israel’s move is more than just “professional recognition,” a term often used to permit cooperation without commitment; it is recognition in substance, even if not explicitly named as such. “It speaks the language of sovereignty and statehood,” Ahmed writes, and cannot be reduced to a matter of bureaucratic nuance.
