In October 2023 an internal EU report was leaked to the Financial Times, regarding the budgetary and cost implications of nine new countries acceding to the EU. This report found, as reported by the FT, that the EU annual budget would have to increase by 21% in order to accommodate these nine countries, who would all be net recipients (would get out more than they put in).
As covered in a previous benefit, the UK annual budgetary contribution would have already reached the region of ยฃ24bn a year by 2024 - so a 21% increase in the overall EU budget would see this balloon to nearly ยฃ30bn before taking into account any year on year increases. That's a further ยฃ5+ Billion a year of post-expansion budget contributions, that the UK can rest easy knowing it has completely avoided.
As of June 2026, the EU budget for the next seven-year period has already more than doubled since 2016, reaching โฌ2 Trillion for 2028-2034. This is without any further members having joined. So a further 21% on top of this, would take the budget up to โฌ2.4 Trillion.

@themilomorrison Well, we did and acted accordingly with Brexit. We were willing to take a mild economic hit to stop mass migration and deregulate EU rules but it was hijacked and we got neither.

These regulations prioritise โpassiveโ means of cooling, like smaller windows, ventilation and shading.
Saying that โactiveโ cooling like air con should be used only as a last resort. The result is very few new homes having air conditioning, even in the hottest areas.
@john_notabot@ramonagusta Did we deregulate from the EU? No
Did we reduce immigration? No
You can sneer all you like but if you voted for something and got the opposite you would be the first one to complain.
