The Jewish people are only a religion. We became a people upon receiving the Torah at Sinai. In the desert with no common land.

“Today you have become a nation to Hashem your G-d” (Deuteronomy 27:9).

Jews are not a nation in the modern sense. We are a people connected by a shared Divinely mission.

As Rabbi Saadiah Gaon put it: “Our nation is only a nation through its Torah.”

Without Torah, there’s no Jewish nation.

Being Jewish is eternal thus lack of observance does not negate one’s Jewishness and he’s liable for his transgressions and does not need to conversion upon repenting.

Jews have existed outside the land of Israel for thousands of years. What joined us, bonded us through various lands, ethnicities and cultures was and only is our sacred Torah.
