2 months ago, I heard that a founder was paying himself $15k monthly, the company packed up. This past weekend, I heard another founder was paying himself $50,000 monthly, the company packed up. Both of them, on investor funds. Like many people like me who invest in and/or back early stage companies, I was horrified if I’m being honest. I think it’s about time we begin to talk about what it really takes to build successful companies.

I’ve recently found that there are really only a few founders in Africa who set out to solve real problems and create thriving businesses, others are just offering “entrepreneurship as a service” (EaaS). They set out to solve their own problem, poverty.

Whenever a founder, director or owner doesn’t understand or practice the principles of ‘delayed gratification’, the death of whatever they’re building is around the corner. Cash flow in business is like blood in your body, once there’s an area of serious bleeding, death could become inevitable.

For context, I founded my first company in 2011. It broke even & became profitable within 15 months. The company was unbelievable liquid by year 2 ending, but I (the founder) wasn’t. I didn’t have an office or earn a constant monthly salary. My then two senior managers earned more than me, this is still a practice in many of my companies today. I pay exec hires more than I pay myself, if at all I earn anything.

Call me an old school entrepreneur, but I don’t like paper valuation. I like:

1. Strong balance sheet
2. Healthy cashflow
3. Frugality (keep cost down at all costs)

I am brutal with cost. I do not like to run a company like I’m Santa, spending like there’s no tomorrow. Now as a fund manager, this means I’m able to return higher ROI to my investors than your favorite hedge fund managers; because of the low cost of running our funds.

Whether it’s fintech or farmland, the principles behind starting, growing and scaling a company are the same. Break them and they will hunt you down!

India has become the first country to successfully land on the South Pole of the moon, making it their third successful moon landing. India is the biggest exporter of rice in the world. They are doing everything right since Prime Minister Modi came to power.

He plays all sides, in fact, he has no side. He is his own man, unlike Tinubu. Modi went to Washington some weeks ago, now he is in South Africa for the BRICS summit. India is projected to become the largest economy in 2075. But this is a story for another day.

South Africa became the leader in Africa. Positioning themselves as the “moral police” for the continent & the AU, Cyril Ramaphosa assumed a pivotal role in Africa. He carries the moral burden for the rest of the continent, he spoke passionately at the ongoing 15th BRICS SUMMIT.

He said & I quote; “Africa has Lithium, Vanadium, Cobalt, Platinum, Nickel, Palladium, Copper, Radium. Africa made it clear that investors should process the minerals in Africa. So that Africa will not export rock & sand, but finished products.”

Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed China’s Xi Jinping, Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, & India's Shri Narendra Modi. BRICS is geopolitics at its best. The alliance include Brazil, Russia, India, China & South Africa.

BRICS is in response to Russia-Ukraine War, it is a counter economic bloc against the imperialism of the West, & foreign isolation of Russia by the West. The bloc represents a quarter of World Economy, a fifth of World Trade, & almost a half of World Population.

More than 20 countries applied to join the BRICS, including Saudi Arabia. But where is Nigeria in all of these Global Events? When did we become a spectator in geopolitics & in Africa Affairs? HOW DID WE GET HERE?

Nigeria failed to take advantage of Russia-Ukraine War in the geopolitics of Gas Supply to Europe. What matters in “interests.” Are we going to miss this BRICS opportunity as well? When there is conflict, I see opportunities. Who is Nigeria’s current Minister for Foreign Affairs?

Who is your current Minister for Trade & Investments? Is he/she paying attention to the ever shifting-cum-dynamic world of Trade & Investments? Is Nigeria planning to join the BRICS, or we are still superglued to the West, the World Bank, & the IMF?

At the heart of BRICS camaraderie is trade in local currencies among member states. Nigeria has the Crisis of Currency Devaluation & an almost empty Foreign Reserve. Would you look towards trading with others with your Naira? Can you import your PMS from Brazil with the Naira?

What is Nigeria'a strategic interests abroad or "Foreign Policy?" Do not tell me it is ECOWAS. That west African bloc has lost touch with reality. The ECOWAS is not the force it once was. Muhammadu Buhari abandoned Nigeria's image abroad. You either market Nigeria or you don't!

Nigeria is no more a leader in the continent, & it vexes me. Obasanjo would have pulled Nigeria into the BRICS before Cyril Ramaphosa, you would have the BRINC, not the BRICS. OBJ would have milked the Russia-Ukraine Conflict & Decoupling.

At the BRINCS, Nigeria would have been the most conspicuous in the room. Read my pinned tweet, I am looking for a president that will match OBJ's Records, perhaps better it. WHAT IS NIGERIA'S INTERESTS ABROAD? How will you relate with the BRICS, America, & the rest of the World?

What happens in Niger doesn’t stay in Niger. It extends beyond Nigerien borders. You have 4 American military bases in Niger. 3 French military bases. Italy & Germany have military bases in Niger as well. But Nigeriens don’t feel safe in their own country. Why?

What is the point of having Special Forces in a country, when you cannot guarantee the safety of the local population?

It’s simple; “black lives don’t matter, it never mattered, & it won’t matter!!”

The Junta in Niger refused to see the delegations from the AU, the UN, & the ECOWAS. However, they met with the Acting U.S Deputy Secretary of State; Victoria Nuland. But no progress was made.

The Nigerien Junta are not backing down. They are rather consolidating their powers, by tightening the security in Niamey, & closing ranks with Mali, Guinea & Burkina Faso. You have more troops brought into Niamey in anticipation of a military attack.

The coming days are going to be delicate. The ECOWAS will hold another meeting in Abuja this Thursday, to know their next course of action. This is the second coup in Niger since the late Mamadou Tandja was ousted in a Palace Coup, in 2010.

One thing is certain; should these negotiations for the transition to Civil Rule succeed, the French will have to be sacrificed by all the candidates in that election. Italy, the Germans & American forces may have to stay. But Nigeriens don’t want their French colonizers at all.

The biggest losers here are the people of Niger. Poverty is biting hard. Only 1 in 7 people have access to electricity. 50% kids aged between 7-16 are out of school. Then again, you have 12.8 million Nigeriens without access to clean water.

With rich Uranium deposits, Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world. This explains the widespread anti-French sentiments. The ECOWAS cannot afford to sanction any military action in Niger. Tinubu has more to worry about at home front. Dialogue is the only way forward.

BREAKING: Rubber Stamp Nigeria Senate rejected Tinubu’s request to invade Niger Republic. This will probably be their first & only patriotic act. But kudos to Northern Nigeria Senators Forum for kicking against the move to invade Niger, they understood the dangers & the implications ahead

ECOWAS sudden change of course is an indictment on the regional body. It exposed the leaders in West Africa, & their lack of deep thinking. Their abrupt change of course after having initially threatened Niger, has undermined the credibility of the ECOWAS as an incompetent bloc.

This could lead to lack of morale among their troops, a loss of confidence among the member states, & their international backers. The ECOWAS will find it increasingly difficult to assert its authority on the region going forward. They misread the situation because of one man.

Sustaining a military campaign in a foreign soil is not “subsidy is gone!” His showmanship & knee-jerk utterances exposed his lack of tact, foresight, insight, & hindsight. He wasn’t prepared for governance. Replacing Maryam Shetty with that “charge & bail” at the last minute is another example.

Threatening a Sovereign Nation with a military strike is not something a leader should open his mouth & say, just like that! You are not the leader of the “Free World,” not by any stretch. Tinubu has dealt further blow to Nigeria’s Image Abroad. He shot without aiming at the target.

Adopting the "push am, e go start” street attitude towards governance, will get Tinubu nowhere. Do away with the hubris or the conceited public façade. People can see through your emptiness. “Hit the ground running” don’t mean you should become hotheaded & unyielding.

With Peter Obi, Nigeria will not only flourish like she did 20 years ago, she’ll have the legitimacy & soft power in West Africa, perhaps more. Right now? Nigeria lacks the soft power to wield any kind of command in the bloc. It is why Niger called his bluff.

The Kremlin thought they will capture Kiev within days. Putin convinced himself that Ukraine was a walk in the park. This is even worse when you realize that the president of Ukraine was never a solider, a KGB nor a spy. He was a bloody comedian. The war in Ukraine is 18 months & counting.

Russia is a major weapons manufacturer & a superpower. Putin was KGB for 16 years, he was a Lieutenant Colonel. Russia has one of the most elite forces in the world. But Russia cannot defeat Ukraine led by a bloody comedian. There are no guarantees in war situation, NONE! Nigeria should know better.

America deployed 500,000 boots + logistics to South Vietnam, & still left with tails between their legs. Why? because of China, the Soviets, & the ‘will’ of North Vietnamese. Imagine charging into Niger that enjoys the full support of Nigeriens, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea & Russia?

“Jaw-jaw is better than war-war.”

Will Africans actually kill one another, just so their colonizers can continue to loot their resources? Who is the problem child here? Who is the aggressor? You wonder why the world have no respect for Africans. It is because of actions like this.

Do you think that China & North Korea are going to miss the chance to join any cause with the potential of doing the French & America one better? The Proxy War won’t be fought by Africans alone. It’ll have an international dimension, or scores to settle.

Do you have what it takes to sustain an all out military campaign in a foreign soil? Why go to a proxy war you don’t control its variables, its outcome & the war propaganda? TO WHAT END? Water will always find its level. A part of me still want the war, so that Africa can move forward!

The ECOWAS bloc should take the L. Concentrate on deepening the democracy in West Africa. Power flows from your People. Your authority is what they say it is! You have your economies on its knees. So fix your individual states. Then you can have the legitimacy to flex your muscles.

Hopefully, these unfortunate events are over.

Canada cheated in their against Nigeria at the FIFA Women's World Cup game by featuring this MAN that they called "transgender", giving them an obvious advantage. @FIFAcom This game should be awarded to Nigeria along with all three points. Nigeria would have won that game EASILY if Canada did not have the advantage of an extra player.

Our 11 women played against 12 Canadian women, because the man has to count as two women.

JUST IN: FBI, STATE DEPARTMENT CITE 'UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES,' DELAY RELEASE OF TINUBU'S CRIMINAL CASES AND IMMIGRATION RECORDS UNTIL 2026

The United States has stated that Bola Tinubu's criminal and immigration records will not be released to the public until 2026 due to "unusual circumstances." American activist Aaron Greenspan filed a request for the release of Mr. Tinubu's records from various federal and local agencies.
