You’re going to a game.
You pack your bag.
You pack your ball.
You pack your kicks, your water, a change of socks.
Don’t forget to pack your trust.
Pack trust!
Trust your skills.
Trust the work you’ve put in.
Trust your prep.
Trust breeds confidence.
Trust builds freedom.

In my work as a mental performance coach, I ask players if they love their sport. If they do, I ask them to describe their love of the game to me. This gives us a template of their intrinsic motivation for those days they’re not feeling like practice or training...
Let’s not shy away from saying that sport can be a spiritual endeavor
You put your blood, sweat, tears and YEARS into an activity, let’s hope it engages your spirit
We too often keep it surface level. It can move to your core without defining you as a person.
The greats?
They don’t just react — they respond. There's a difference.
Mindfulness gives you the ability to pause between emotion and action.
Master the pause, master your mental game!
#PlayPresent
Before the crowds. Before the game. Before the lights shine bright, it’s just you and your breath.
🧘♂️ Inhale confidence
😤 Exhale doubt
Mindfulness as a key element to your pre-game routine is a no-brainer!

As part of @Dominican_ASPP I have the opportunity to help support the mental performance of a few of our university athletic programs. 📸 here with Men’s Basketball, doing the work!
It calls for you to attend to it regularly, just as you do your on-court skills and your strength/conditioning.
Will you do so?
How much do you want it?

🧵 Let me put it bluntly:
You want to be good? You have to know in your bones that as a result of the REAL WORK you’ve put in, your game is nice as hell.
That when you shoot the rock you know that thing is good. That you know you’re going to bring it.
And. And! /1
Much of THAT work, of course, can’t be done on the court. You can’t only look at the court for that work. You have to look inwards.
Much of the REAL WORK is internal. It’s reflection. It’s intention setting. It’s imaging. It’s managing stressors.

That’s if you’re in the rotation (no guarantee, and a whole other set of concerns/mental challenges if not).
You have to be fast. You have to be strong. You have to be skilled, first and foremost.

The game, as you get better, just gets harder. To the uninitiated, basketball isn’t as hard as other sports: throw a ball in to a hoop, what’s so hard about that?
