Modern Europe’s industrial prosperity rested on a marriage of German engineering and Russian resources. Nobody wants to talk about this now, but it's true.
Washington worked diligently (using spoilers within the EU and Russia itself) to break up the arrangement, while Beijing hoped to replace Germany as Russia’s principal economic partner. And, of course, the EU obligingly assisted both of them.
Now Western Europe proposes to compete with China while purchasing more expensive energy from America, and Russia has lost out too because its natural partner is the rest of Europe, with which it shares centuries of history and culture. It has very little in common with China (although it is similar to America, in many ways).
The extraordinary failure of the collective European leadership has been to impoverish the prospects of Europe while strengthening the positions of its competitors.
And please don't reply with nonsense about democracy or human rights. The EU doesn't care about these things in Turkey, Israel, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan or the Gulf States, etc. It's just weaponised selectively when it suits.
As someone who very actively monitors Israeli English and Russian language media - blogs, podcasts, etc. - and some of the mainstream Hebrew language media as well, the sectoral/tribal divides within Israeli society today seem to be some of the worst I’ve observed in years.
Just among the Jewish majority - putting the Arabs, Druze, Circassians, and other minority communities aside - you have pretty rigid echo chambers where the same people from different sectors go on the same shows and say the same things to their sectoral audience almost as if on a circuit.
The Haredim/ultra-Orthodox, Israel’s 1.5 million strong Russian speaking community, the religious Zionists, what remains of Israel’s socialist left, among others, coexist while living in parallel realities. This comes into stark relief when Israel has elections and is masked during times of acute national crisis, like October 7th.
If I were Iran, I'd attack before the U.S. midterms. Send some ballistic missiles to American bases and force Trump into responding at this crucial point for his term in office. Really capitalise on how unpopular this war is in the U.S. at such a sensitive time in American politics.
But Iran still seems too focused on trying to appear like the "good guys" or "reasonable" on the international stage. No matter what Iran does, western governments will never see them anywhere near that.
Restraint is a good thing for other reasons, but you should also know when is the right time to use your leverage and play your cards to maximum effect.
Now is the best time for that.
