If you, like me, love rental market data, or if you don't and but you want to know about the rental housing market here in St. John's, you an read about it here:

In which I opine on the new short-term rental accomodation regulations and talk about why this was never going to solve our housing crisis:

2/2IDK how this idea that denying people living with addiction a basic human right is going to improve matters for anyone got so ingrained in our society. To me it defies basic common sense to presume that it would not be safer and better for everyone if people just... had homes?
1/2Because my friends and family know I'm obsessed with housing, they ask me questions.
So yesterday, two different people (whom I adore and who are kind, caring humans) asked me some variation of, "But do you really just house people even though they do drugs?"
Yes. Yes, you do.
And since someone is about to say something about using percentages:
MMR: $680-$859 (CMHC)
Renter income: $38,400-$43,400(StatsCan)
Social assistance: $10,483-$11,410 ("Welfare in Canada, 2016" this is just for NL, couldn't find aggregate national data and I have a paper due🙃)
TIL from 2006-2016:
-median market rents increased 26%
-average renter household income increased by 13%
-social assistance (in NL, couldn't readily find aggregate national data and I have a paper due) rates increased by slightly less than 9%
@OrcaTheGreat I read somewhere the "d'Espoir" was itself a bastardization of "d'Espera" from Portuguese, which I *think* is "of waiting". So the meaning has changed three times because of slightly different pronunciations 🤷
@spreadthelove7 They are trying to do some of this on the back foot as I understand it, but it would have prevented the current crisis if they had been given time to work on this stuff before bringing the program in.
@spreadthelove7 -Mandate livable wages for ECEs and adjust operating grants accordingly
-Lower regulatory barriers and provide financial assistance for opening registered home-based care
-Subsidize and provide living stipend for those attending ECE training
@spreadthelove7 So basically, it's great, if you can get a spot, but you probably can't, so it's worse than it was before they brought this program in. Pushing provinces to implement without pre-work to ensure enough supply -motivated by wanting a political win- threw us all under the bus.
@spreadthelove7 1.5 YO has been on waiting lists since the week of his birth. I finally have 3 days/week (less than I need, better than nothing) next month. Doesn't matter if it's affordable if you can't get a spot. More demand means private childcare is now more expensive than it was before.

I'm so proud of the results of the Green Kickstarter Fund- $260K to 29 projects that prove small actions can = big impact on both the environment & tenants' quality of life! Shoutout to @bkclifford whose contribution to this work was absolutely essential.
