Trita Parsi, Iran expert and president of the Quincy Institute, joined the show with a theory he said he was raising for the first time on air:

"One theory, in the absence of a credible explanation by the government, is that there was some sort of effort to go at the nuclear sites, which required taking over an airway in Iran, or going in with forces to build one... and that this whole thing was that attempt, and it failed miserably.

The cover story, which may not be false in and of itself, is that there was an F-15 shot down and a rescue effort to save those two pilots, but that's just a marginal part of the story compared to what actually happened."

He tied the timing directly to what came next:

"Keep in mind, it is about two days after all of this that Trump comes out with that threat of saying he's going to end an entire civilization, and 12 hours later he agrees to a ceasefire."

On the deeper cause of the collapse, he pointed to the Tomahawk numbers:

"The U.S. lost more aircraft that weekend than it has since Vietnam, 12 in total. Was there ever a U.S. interest that warranted this war? The answer is absolutely clear, there never was."

He wasn't buying the headline numbers on the Hormuz fee reports rattling markets:

"I've seen a lot of reporting coming out of Reuters that's been highly questionable. I've not come across those numbers in any conversations I've had."

💢 NEW: UN Scrutinizes Israeli Mole at UNICEF

🔹The UN secretary-general’s office says it will coordinate with UNICEF over “serious allegations” concerning Yahav Lichner after Drop Site News published emails showing the Israeli national shared sensitive internal UN information with Israeli diplomats while working at the UN Population Fund.

🔹Devex senior global reporter Colum Lynch reported Thursday, citing two UN officials, that Lichner, now UNICEF’s Director in Washington, had been placed on administrative leave following Drop Site’s investigation.

🔹At Friday’s UN briefing, deputy spokesperson for the secretary-general Farhan Haq did not confirm Lichner’s current status and whether he had been placed on leave, but said UNICEF was “taking the appropriate action,” adding that, if the allegations are true, Lichner’s actions would violate UN staff obligations requiring “independence” and “impartiality.”

“The responsibilities of staff are international, not national,” Haq said.

🔹Pressed on whether Secretary-General António Guterres or his office was involved, Haq said the Secretariat was aware of the allegations and “will be involved in any sort of coordination and information sharing that is needed,” while stressing that UNICEF is leading the matter because it employs Lichner.

🔹Haq did not answer whether Lichner’s reported leave is paid or unpaid, whether the secretary-general was consulted on the decision, or whether the UN’s internal watchdog, OIOS, is investigating.
