Director Li’s “lower caption”:
A lot of friends have been asking about my reading list. There is one book I love most: Bill Porter’s Road to Heaven: Encounters with Chinese Hermits. This was the book that first introduced me to the idea of hermits, the first time I was able to imagine an ancient civilization through words, and the first time I heard the phrase “dwelling in the mountains.”

At the time, I thought to myself that someday I would make a film called Dwelling in the Mountains. It might be a narrative film, or it might be a documentary.

After finishing this travelogue, I began writing the epic fantasy novel The Gods Once Came to the Human World (which tells the story of the first God of Death). It begins in the primordial world and moves into the human world of shamanic culture. I wrote about every aspect of life, reincarnation and mortality, the cycles of human civilization, and the destruction and rebuilding of a previous human civilization…

The Gods Once Came to the Human World takes place thousands of years ago. It eventually evolves into Don’t Speak of Sunny Days, where remnants of fantasy still linger in the novel, and then into Spring Mountain Realm. On the surface, Spring Mountain Realm looks like modern society, but it still exists within the worldview I created: the place names continue, the relationships between the characters continue, and many elements from their previous lives are preserved.

This is a little universe I have spent many years creating for myself. I designed this world from countless dimensions, including its social structure, education and healthcare systems, culture and economy, human geography and history, customs and traditions, the hierarchy of the underworld and hell, magical artifacts and spells, and so on. I wrote 300,000 Chinese characters just to establish the world-building.

After finishing the novel, I couldn’t come out of that world for a very long time. It felt as though the world truly existed, and as though the characters within it had genuinely lived.

After that, I wrote two side stories, Don’t Speak of Sunny Days and Spring Half Gone, continuing to connect the causes and consequences of all the characters 1,500 years later.

Of course, I still owe several books that I haven’t written yet: At the Southern Tower, Song of the Azure Phoenix, and Encounter Without a Deadline. Maybe I’ll write them someday, when I truly become a hermit.

Finally, I’d like to share a passage from The Gods Once Came to the Human World with everyone. (Please don’t mind the youthful, somewhat immature writing from my early days—I have always been trying to become better.)
