The Horizon Literacy/Numeracy Team is a part of Horizon School Division which operates 43 schools across East Central Saskatchewan in Treaty 4 and 6 Territory.
Drummers set the stage while students hung commemorative ribbons on the fence for National Truth & Reconciliation Day at Humboldt Public School. Thank you @AmandaMoosemay and HPS staff/Truth and Reconciliation Committee for making this a meaningful experience for students.
Grade 7’s @FoamLakeComp tackled @MakeMathMoments ‘Detention Buy Out’ task as an intro into equations. High engagement & lots of convo about what they would each choose considering their own personal circumstances. @horizonsd205@HorizonLiteracy
Math 6: Love the reasoning & connections fostered from this #mathup lesson. Ss create a triangle & tear off the angles. Ss come to arrange the angles in a semi circle where there’s a straight angle of 180. How is this possible? @horizonsd205@HorizonLiteracy@WadenaES
Math 6: Today, I paired @MarianSmall MathUp with @geogebra so that Ss could explore triangles. We did this through ‘play’ & experimentation & noticing that we were only able to construct triangles whose sum of angles equaled 180. @horizonsd205@HorizonLiteracy@WadenaES
One of the stations from Grade 2 math stations: Maze 100 - What path through the maze leads you to a total closest to 100? Great student engagement with this task. @horizonsd205@HorizonLiteracy@WadenaES
Another Grade 2 math station: Closest to 100 - Ss each draw 4 cards from the deck and try to create two 2-digit numbers that, when added, will get them as close to 100 as possible. From https://t.co/xLeXzWx38f @WadenaES@HorizonLiteracy@horizonsd205
Grade 1: Developing the connection between addition and subtraction with manipulatives and numbers. How do the counters align with each question on the whiteboard? @WadenaES@horizonsd205@HorizonLiteracy
My favourite dot image was the basis for our conversation in Grade 2 about how we can decompose numbers to make them easier to add mentally and build fact fluency. @HorizonLiteracy@horizonsd205@WadenaES
Grade 5’s have been working hard to differentiate between tenths and hundredths. Today, we used @BerkeleyEverett video to talk about what the term ‘whole’ means. Ss gained a much deeper understanding with this video guiding their thinking. @horizonsd205@HorizonLiteracy@WadenaES
Check it out! Literature is a great way to introduce mathematical ideas to children. Once emotional engagement is established through storytelling, intellectual engagement with the math readily follows. @HorizonLiteracy
What else are we developing in students when we create mathematical classrooms that value and support multiple ways of knowing? You might be surprised! Read my thoughts on this in the November CAfLN newsletter.
