@Kate_McBride_1@RoseBJackson@ChrisMinnsMP It's extremely unfortunate almost all of the buybacks to date (and those that are being proposed) are on the Murray River which does nothing to help the Darling-Baaka issues.
The Murray doesnt have the capacity to handle the transfer of all of this additional water.
@RichardCBeasley It's always seemed strange the intense focus on water recoveries in the southern basin above natural and physical constraints in the river system which mean the additional water cannot be delivered & in any event does nothing to help this ecological disaster on the Darling River
I defended NSW irrigators from illegal water buy backs for environmental flows to S.A. this week in Parliament.
The NSW State and Federal Govts must understand that itโs not ok to steal 450GL of water from irrigation communities.
Buy backs are a wrecking ball.
@MaryanneSlatte1 The Natural Resources Commission and @MaryanneSlatte1 are right - without a volumetric benchmark to reconcile future actions against, there is nothing to hold bureaucrats accountable from either massive overreach into consumptive water or visa versa. It's multiple steps backwards
10 times worse than the last major fish kill in 2019. The Water Management Act 2000 stipulates reviews are required every 5 years yet they've never occured. Who will step up and try to fix this? https://t.co/VtcCIMj6jj
Few people outside of Menindee have heard of it before, a catastrophic fish kill five years ago. Now, millions of fish once again have been found dead as locals plead for more help from authorities. Water researcher @kate_mcbride_1 explains what is causing the mass deaths.
An environmental disaster at Menindee. What happened to "adaptive management"? Or any management!

@david_papps55 Beyond keeping the maximum 30% carryover for next year, what other environmental waterings are required this year? Why not spill the excess water now so allocations to the productive sector can maximise the wet conditions whilst the Valley remains well under the SDL
If the intention is to move to SDL reporting, surely someone needs to check the SDL is less than Cap. Unfortunately this has been ignored & NSW will licence over-extraction in northern NSW and the Commonwealth is looking to make up for it by taking further water from southern NSW
@MD_Basin_Auth
released another report to approve NSW changes to the BDL by stressing how important it was to compare them to Cap - then in the next paragraph admitted it didn't formally assess the models against Cap or new "Cap scenario". It's worthless https://t.co/X0stBphELW
@soupercocky Cherry-picking soundbites from a document that isn't publicly available and which we do not know the process or the veracity of (or the responses to it) is inappropriate. They could have just asked the people named, rather than a new employee of MIL with just 6 weeks in the role.
@soupercocky A comprehensive Inquiry and full transparency is something we definitely support. Water ownership and trades (including those by EWHs) should be made publicly available and transparent and must adhere to the Basin Plan Water Trading rules to ensure integrity and public confidence
@soupercocky@acccgovau@nswpolice Procedural fairness requires the person under investigation to be given a reasonable opportunity to put their case. The appropriate thing to do was to direct the question to the people who are the subject of the allegation and allow them to respond. Frankly, it was unbecoming
In 2020, Australian leaders were crowing that we are a country of 25 million producing food for 75 million. That statistic sounds absurd today if you visit a supermarket. We must protect those producing staples such as dairy, wheat, rice, fruits and beef.

Thankfully it has rained a lot and water storages are full. However, in supermarkets today, supply is struggling to keep up with demand & food prices are soaring. More foresight is needed to protect food production in Aust

@Jeremy_Morton_ @NSWDPIE_Water @craigfeuerherdt @Rawalak_Farms @Jeremy_Morton The triggers for Additional Dilution Flows have been met. A combined volume of 2,000GL is required at Hume & Dartmouth & both of those storages have >2,000GL
NSW Murray Valley General Security have every right to question why they are deprived of 547GL (31% of their allocation)
@Jeremy_Morton_ @NSWDPIE_Water @craigfeuerherdt @Rawalak_Farms @Jeremy_Morton The "additional dilution flow" requirement of 3,000ML per day (50% from NSW) is in addition to the 1,850GL (which includes 58GL per mth for dilution and losses).
That's a further 547,500ML from the NSW MV GS consumptive pool for a salinity issue that doesnt exist.
@Jeremy_Morton_ @NSWDPIE_Water @craigfeuerherdt @Rawalak_Farms @Jeremy_Morton What is the purpose of "salt dilution" flows on top of 750GL to the SA border when there was over 400GL in airspace releases from Hume over the past month and there has been no salinity issues for decades?
