Allot of confusion online about Asian hornets. The one we have invading the UK is second from left ‘yellow legged Asian hornet’ to the left of it is a common wasp, to the right our native hornet and the big one in centre is the giant Asian hornet which is not found in Europe.

A sighting, not yet confirmed by NBU, of an #Asianhornet (Vespa velutina) in #Plymouth yesterday, about 800m from the dockyard. The suspect insect was seen attacking bees sniffing around a solar wax extractor. Photos were taken and reported through the Asian hornet smartphone app

On Thursday 22nd June a small primary nest of Asian hornets was reported to the NBU.
This is the earliest date in the season that a nest has ever been found in Great Britain.

@JaneyN123 Hi there, this looks like one of our native European hornets. A couple of key identifiers are the yellow face, reddish brown legs and reddish brown thorax. Asian Hornets have an orange face, black thorax and yellow legs. 🐝

@MjH_Arch_Tech Hi Mike, I know you have probably already checked, but have you compared to pictures of our native European hornet?
We haven’t received any reports of Asian Hornets in that area, though that doesn’t mean they are not there!
