I was helping my girlfriend pack for a

trip when I opened the wrong

suitcase.

She sighed, closing the door behind

dread.

"Sit," she commanded, motioning to

something dangerous?"

"Not just dangerous," she said, eyes

darkening. "Powerful."

"Like a mob boss?" I scoffed.

"Worse," she whispered. "I work for

an organization older than any

government keeping secrets no one

else can know."

My mind spun. "And the money?"

"Payment. Protection. Entry."

She handed me a folded note. I

unfolded it carefully. Elegant

handwriting spelled out a chilling

invitation, binding us in a pact I didn’t

ask for.
