She was a brilliant physicist who made significant contributions to the understanding of the atomic nucleus. She proposed the nuclear shell model, which explains how protons and neutrons are arranged in different energy levels within the nucleus. This model helps to predict the stability, shape, and reactions of different nuclei. She also worked on the theory of two-photon absorption, which is a quantum phenomenon that occurs when an atom absorbs two photons simultaneously. This process has applications in laser technology, spectroscopy, and microscopy. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963 for her work on the nuclear shell model, along with J. Hans D. Jensen and Eugene Wigner. She was the second woman to receive this prestigious prize, after Marie Curie.
She was born in Germany in 1906 and studied physics at the University of Göttingen under three Nobel laureates. She married Joseph Edward Mayer, a chemist, and moved to the United States in 1930. She faced many challenges as a female scientist in a male-dominated field and often had to work as a volunteer or an unpaid associate at various institutions. She collaborated with her husband and other researchers on topics such as organic molecules, statistical mechanics, isotope separation, and thermonuclear weapons. She became a U.S. citizen in 1933 and a full professor of physics at the University of California, San Diego in 1960. She died in 1972 at the age of 65.
Maria Goeppert Mayer was a remarkable woman who overcame many obstacles and achieved excellence in her field. She is an inspiration for generations of physicists, especially women, who aspire to follow her footsteps. She is also honored by several awards and scholarships named after her, such as the Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award for early-career women physicists established by the American Physical Society in 1986.
