The energy transition, while crucial, will not wean us off #fossilfuels globally for at least several decades. We need supply-side policy like the #CarbonTakeback Obligation now. #climatechange https://t.co/JJr4sOI3X4
"Governments must establish a requirement that if producers extract #carbon from the earth, they must capture and store an equivalent amount." #CarbonTakeback#CCS@HughHelferty@njdotcom https://t.co/2Id82NSpcC
My latest article: "Despite overwhelming evidence of harm, it took government regulation for oil companies to phase out [leaded gasoline]. It is increasingly urgent that governments do the same for the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere."

@HughHelferty 's newest article: "One-hundred years on, the [leaded gasoline] disaster should teach us a serious lesson: The burden of proof for product safety must fall on the producer."

Fossil fuel companies make tremendous profits off of products that cause GHG emissions and should be the ones to take responsibility for these emissions, write @HughHelferty and Jessica Nacheman of @PACEmissions. https://t.co/7rvUDkTiuv
The chances for real progress at COP28 were badly damaged early this year when an oil company CEO was appointed to lead the negotiations. And now investigative journalists have confirmed some of the worst fears of those who criticized that absurd appointment with the shocking news that the President-designate has been using the meetings he has set up with nations around the world to sell more oil and gas. At the same time, the fossil fuel company he leads (the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) has been preparing to launch one of the largest expansions of oil and gas production of any company in the world — timed to begin immediately after COP28 concludes.
Using international climate talks as leverage to shore up support for pumping more oil and gas at a time when we urgently need to phase out fossil fuels is — to say the least — utterly appalling.
Our co-founder @HughHelferty just published this hard-hitting piece in @sfchronicle: "If we don’t stop these [#oil] companies, they are going to drive the planet and all of us on it over a cliff — all in the name of shareholder profit." #ClimateCrisis https://t.co/1I4rSiuIZj

Great overview article of developments with CTBO.
“The idea that governments are somehow going to pay for carbon dioxide disposal while the industry carries on making the money it is making, and being the size it is, is unrealistic.”

“A carbon takeback obligation sends a signal to the producer and the consumer that less production and less consumption would be better.”

The burgeoning idea of forcing #fossilfuel producers to “take back” their #carbon could guarantee #NetZero, force polluters to pay for solutions and speed up the #EnergyTransition. @OllieGordon88 reports.

@ftenergy@pilitaclark of @ft is right. It's time for fossil fuel producers to take responsibility for emissions. And a Carbon Takeback Obligation is a great way to make that happen. Doesn't that make more sense than higher taxes! #oilandgas#GHG
