If you had served instead of dealing drugs and committing Bank Fraud, you would know that from the first week of Boot Camp every service member is taught the same rule. You obey lawful orders, and you must refuse unlawful ones. This is not new, controversial, or political. It is basic military training.

The Department of Defense spells this out directly. DoD Directive 2311.01 states clearly that members of the armed forces have an obligation to disobey orders that are clearly illegal. This principle is part of the Law of Armed Conflict, the Nuremberg principles, and every service level ethics and rules of engagement briefing.

So before anyone starts throwing around the word traitor, they should learn what it actually means. A traitor is someone who levies war against the United States or gives aid and comfort to its enemies. Senator Mark Kelly is a retired Navy Captain, an astronaut, and a sitting United States Senator. Nothing he has said comes close to treason.

Disagreeing with a policy is not treason. Reminding the military that they only follow lawful orders is not sedition. It is literally what our armed forces are trained to do.

You may not like his politics, but calling a Navy Captain a traitor for repeating long standing DoD doctrine is ridiculous.
