No this is not the reason why so few westerns know the history.

The reason is that is has been inconvenient historically for the Roman Empire to have survived in the east and was denigrated and dismissed once Western Europeans decided they wanted their own Roman Empire in the Middle Ages.

Historians have not traditionally seen it as part of the history of Europe and so it has been ignored and misunderstood.
