Hedonic Mastery Scale (HMS), with five clear levels:

1. HMS-0 – Pre-hedonic
Pain and pleasure are uncontrolled forces. Life is dominated by addiction, chronic despair, torture, ritual human sacrifice, mass hysteria, or uncontrolled rage. Most of history until ~10,000 years ago falls here.

HMS-1 – Basic containment
Society has crude but functional mechanisms to limit the worst excesses: religious prohibitions, shame cultures, legal punishment of extreme cruelty or gluttony, early ascetic traditions. Pleasure is tolerated only in narrow, sanctioned forms; pain is endured stoically or numbed with alcohol/drugs. (Most agrarian empires and early nation-states.)

HMS-2 – Systematic discipline
Institutionalized systems appear that actively train individuals in self-control: monastic orders, martial codes, stoic or Confucian education, widespread fasting rituals, delayed-gratification norms. Pleasure is refined (art, cuisine, courtship) but still heavily regulated. Pain is transformed into virtue (honor, sacrifice). (Classical Greece/Rome at peaks, Song-dynasty China, medieval Christendom/Islamic golden age, Tokugawa Japan.)

HMS-3 – Individual sovereignty
The average citizen, not just an elite, gains reliable inner tools (widespread literacy in philosophy, secular ethics, basic psychology, meditation/contemplative practices).
Addiction rates drop, suicide is rare, violence plummets.
Pleasure is abundant yet non-destructive; pain is faced consciously and often transmuted (therapy, art, sport). (Best pockets of 21st-century secular West, Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness experiment, some Nordic societies.)
- Spiritual Pain is digested without resentment and with the ability to totally forgive.
- Pleasure can be resisted on any level.

HMS-4 – Collective transcendence
Pain and pleasure are no longer primarily individual problems but are handled at civilizational scale with near-perfect efficiency.
Suffering is minimized without suppressing joy; pleasure is amplified without creating dependence. Technologies (medical, neurochemical, cultural) eliminate almost all involuntary pain and compulsive craving.
The population as a whole displays resilience, meaning, and spontaneous creativity even under extreme external stress. (Currently hypothetical — no known historical example.)

A civilization that reaches Type-3 on the Kardashev scale (galactic energy) but remains stuck at HMS-1 or HMS-2 is almost guaranteed to self-destruct within centuries.

A civilization that reaches HMS-4 with only Type-0.7 energy is effectively indestructible and will inherit the future.

Therefore the true “great filter” is not energy; it is Hedonic Mastery.

No matter what scale a civilization can harness energy, their inability to handle pain & pleasure can destroy everything. 100% !!

We should judge the greatness of a civilization by one decisive criterion:
Not primarily by how much energy it can harness,
but by how wisely it can govern the twin forces of pain and pleasure in the human soul.

A society that commands gigawatts yet remains enslaved by addiction, despair, envy, gluttony, cruelty, or mindless distraction is already carries the seeds of its own collapse—no matter how bright its cities burn.

Conversely, a civilization that teaches its members to face pain without breaking and to enjoy pleasure without becoming its prisoner will endure and flourish even with modest material means.

Energy mastery is merely a tool.
Self-mastery over pain and pleasure is the only foundation of destiny—for individuals and for humanity as a whole.
