@jeanaelle #h1170 This was a major wake-up call for the plantation owners all over Latin America. It never happened, but it was obviously in their minds that if it happened in Saint-Domingue it could happen elsewhere.
@jeanaelle #h1170 As usual, the crowned heads cared little for the needs and concerns of the lower classes. Even when their complaints were agreed to, the government frequently reneged on their promises.
@jeanaelle #h1170 The Royal Pragmatic was ignored like so many other edicts that came from Europe. We all read how successful the one about not using indigenous people as slaves worked.
@Dan_Sharpes#h1170 The taste of independence the colonialists had for that short period of time and all the other events that were showing that it was not necessary to have royal approval for everything changed how people thought about their lives.
@jeanaelle #1170 Those who enjoy a higher economic and social status are always fearful of losing it. That is why they hung onto honor as hard as they did.
#h1170 The idea of a republic like the United States established scared many elites because it meant a complete rejection of monarchy and welcomed religious freedom. (R & L, 279)
#h1170 "Corruption, contraband, concubinage" to that list of things wrong in Colonial Latin America, let's add greed, extreme racism, and stupidity in not seeing what it was all leading to. (R & L, 235)
#h1170 instead of asking why the settlers rebelled, the Spanish representatives increased the very things the rebels had asked to be decreased: taxes, tributes, and slavery.
@Dan_Sharpes#h1170 The church's misogynistic attitude that promoted this ideology. Women were to blame in almost every illicit affair according the the Church as they were direct descendants of the seductress Eve.
@jeanaelle #h1170 It seemed as thought every insult to one's honor, sexual assault and rape included, became the issue for the male family members. It is unjust that it all came back to the victims if the situation became public. Men usually walked away from their actions unscathed.
@DavidPa50166007#h1170 It is good that they would at least try to protect women this way. It is unfortunate that the church did little to protect them from spousal violence in other situations.
#h1170 The tricks used by colonial Latin Americans to cover up falls from grace, or honor in this case, involved hiding the truth from the public and doing everything possible to keep things private and secret. Nazzari 103.
@jeanaelle #h1170 There was no real defense for anyone in the lower classes who had a complaint against people in the higher classes. It was worse for the slaves and freed slaves because they were considered completely dishonest and without honor.
@Bree10855099#h1170 In some cases, the father raised the child as his adopted son so that he ensure that he had an heir. It is not uncommon for a child to look unlike his mother or father, but another relative, so maybe it was easier then to deny paternity.
