Carruthers et al. (2024) attribute mangrove dieback in the Maldives to extreme sea-level rise from the Indian Ocean Dipole. This caused salinity stress, reduced sediment accretion, and soil submergence, exceeding the tolerance of Bruguiera cylindrica, resulting in mortality.
