The president’s speech was good but this forum was not where he needed to be at this time. The country that everyone is talking about for its strategic location doesn’t need to give a yearly progress report to second tier foreign diplomats sitting in another country. I would’ve invited them all to come and see what Somaliland accomplished with very little help. The president’s comments about talks with Somalia could’ve been clearer, I was hoping the president will say “Somaliland will not hold talks with Somalia as long as I am president” period. Instead he explained why prior talks failed, no one cares.

Saudi Arabia cannot credibly claim to be assembling a 50-country coalition to protect Red Sea shipping while simultaneously undermining the stability of Somaliland, the very country that has,for decades, secured its 850-kilometre coastline at the southern gateway to the Red Sea.
Despite receiving no international support, Somaliland has kept its coastline free from terrorist infiltration,Houthi activity, piracy, and organised smuggling, helping safeguard one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors.
Any serious Red Sea security strategy should strengthen reliable regional partners, not work against them.
We thank @SenTedCruz, Chairman of the @SenateForeign Africa Subcommittee, for his letter to @SecRubio urging a separate U.S. Travel Advisory and Diplomatic Security assessment for Somaliland. For nearly three decades, Somaliland has been a beacon of stability and democracy in the Horn of Africa. It is time U.S. policy reflects that reality.
