Death Chance magic. Cumulative 1% chance of dying every time you cast a spell. Want powerful magic in your campaign but don't want spell casters to dominate? Check it out for a Merlin/Gandalf-esque feel to wizardry.

@SlyFlourish Then kill them mercilessly for every mistake. Emphasise how deadly the world can be.
The character they manage to get up to 2nd level will feel super-special to them. I've not done this for 1st level D&D but it works surprisingly well for 0th level characters in DCC.
@SlyFlourish If you're dead set on starting at 1st from some purist motive, own it and run it like a Dungeon Crawl Classics lvl 0 character funnel.
Have everyone run 2 (3 for small groups) 1st level characters and warn them that the death rate is going to be very high until they reach 2nd.
@Ri_Science@closefrank Just as these lectures were going out, I started work as a research associate in Rutherford Appleton lab, next door but one to Frank Close. They're a benchmark of clarity to this day :-)
📯 A new #xmaslectures series from the archives is up on our website!
@closefrank's 1993 series 'A cosmic onion' explored how the Universe formed, and how it might end. It also has our favourite intro of the '90s ✨

@AstroKatie Ah, fantastic, thank you. So the proto-solar nebula may have had dark matter in the mix, but whatever process let the sun transfer angular momentum out to the solar system couldn't operate for DM, so it participate in the solar collapse?
Dark matter clumps at the level of galaxies (or it couldn't explain rotation curves), but not at the level of stars (or it'd mess up stellar mass-pressure relationships). Why, I wonder? Is it too hot & can't slow down enough to clump as it's non-interacting? @AstroKatie
