For more than sixty years—across two dictatorships and countless acts of state-sponsored terror—Mr. Olia practiced a unique kind of art that was an act of defiance. Working from a studio in the medieval town of Fiano Romano, twenty-five miles north of Rome, he cast in bronze the likenesses of those the clerical dictatorship had executed or tortured, and those who fought back. Each statue was a refusal to let the regime write the final record.

His subjects ranged from Neda Agha-Soltan, killed during Iran’s 2009 protests, to Navid Afkari, the wrestler executed in 2020; from Reyhaneh Jabbari to Baktash Abtin, the dissident poet who died in prison. He also made busts of the Iranian Resistance’s own fallen, including Mohammad Hanifnejad, the founding leader of the People’s Mojahedin Organization.

هزاران درود و تبریک بر اعضای پرافتخار شورای ملی مقاومت ایران، و به‌ویژه بر رهبر مقاومت که ۴۵ سال پیش با دوراندیشی این آلترناتیو دموکراتیک را بنیان نهاد و رئیس جمهور منتخب شورا که دنیائی را به حمایت از مردم و مقاومت ایران با خود همرا کرد.

امروز، پس از دهه‌ها ایستادگی، فداکاری و پرداخت بهای سنگین، این مقاومت بیش از هر زمان دیگری به تحقق آرمان مردم ایران نزدیک شده است؛ آرمان رهایی از فاشیسم دینی و پایان دادن به حاکمیت ارتجاع، سرکوب و اعدام.

Please do not grant special privileges or political legitimacy to any unelected claimant to power. The future of Iran must be decided by the Iranian people, not by foreign platforms or hereditary claims.
Iranians rejected Shah’s dictatorship in 1979 and continue to reject dictatorship today. They are sacrificing their lives for a democratic, secular republic based on free elections, pluralism, and human rights, not for a return to monarchy or the continuation of the current theocracy.

Stand with the Iranian people and their democratic aspirations, not with any form of authoritarian rule.

Reza Pahlavi pleit systematisch voor buitenlandse militaire aanvallen op Iran. In dit fragment koppelt hij de afgelopen militaire escalaties bovendien aan zijn eigen bezoek aan Israël, waarmee hij die geweldsdynamiek niet alleen normaliseert, maar er ook politiek mee pronkt.

Het draagvlak onder Iraniërs is daardoor verder uitgehold. Zijn uitnodiging aan de Tweede Kamer is daarom niet verdedigbaar en dient te worden ingetrokken.

Het is onacceptabel dat sommige VVD-Kamerleden zich blijven inzetten voor een apart podium voor Reza Pahlavi. Dat dient niet het Nederlandse belang, maar een politieke agenda.

Juist nu er al jaren meldingen zijn van intimidatie van Iraanse democratische activisten door sommige van zijn aanhangers en in Canada een moordzaak loopt tegen personen die volgens berichtgeving gelieerd zijn aan de monarchistische beweging, is extra terughoudendheid op zijn plaats.

Daar komt bij dat de naam Pahlavi onlosmakelijk verbonden is met de geschiedenis van de SAVAK, de geheime dienst van het voormalige sjah-regime, die internationaal bekendstaat om politieke repressie, willekeurige arrestaties, marteling en vooral executies van politieke tegenstanders. Juist daarom verdient een uitnodiging aan de zoon van de sjah extra zorgvuldige afweging.

Respect en dank aan mevrouw @KatiPiri voor haar inzet voor een inclusieve rondetafel. Geen uitzonderingspositie voor de omstreden zoon van de voormalige dictator sjah.
