⚡️International Criminal Court has opened an investigation into the Situation in Lithuania/Belarus
The case was referred by Lithuania, which asked the Court to examine alleged crimes against humanity committed by Belarusian authorities. Although #Belarus is not a member of @IntlCrimCourt, the Prosecutor’s Office found that part of the alleged crimes took place on Lithuanian territory, giving it jurisdiction.
The investigation covers cross-border crimes committed since May 1, 2020, including deportation and political persecution through deportation, which may amount to crimes against humanity.
The Prosecutor’s Office says there are reasonable grounds to believe that deportations targeting real or perceived opponents of the Belarusian government were carried out as part of a state policy and approved at the highest levels of government.

Independent journalists, factory workers and union leaders, military officers, politicians, priest, cultural manager, musician, student, media manager, business owner, IT specialist… all sentenced to long prison terms for "high treason."
The number of people convicted on these charges in #Belarus is skyrocketing. Just nine months ago, it was nearly half of what it is now. #FreeThemAll
📣 “The reason these crimes were prosecuted is that they shatter the conscience of the international community as a whole,” said @DebRuizVerduzco

@PhilipGrant40 26 years ago this week, the arrest of Pinochet, the Chilean dictator, gave hope to victims and it was a huge boost to the international justice movement. Part of what made that event so consequential is that back then almost nobody thought it possible.
