The leadership of the International Association of Women Judges Uganda Chapter (IAWJ-UC) yesterday paid a courtesy visit to Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court as part of its ongoing campaign to strengthen membership and mobilise action against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
The delegation was led by the IAWJ-UC President, Lady Justice Olive Kazaarwe Mukwaya, together with the Vice President, Lady Justice Joyce Kavuma Kyambadde, and other members of the Association.
Addressing judicial officers and staff at the Court, Lady Justice Kazaarwe said the Association has committed to reaching 1,000 families during its three-year term of office as part of efforts to contribute to the fight against SGBV.
She urged judicial officers to prioritise and expeditiously handle cases involving sexual and gender-based violence, describing such acts as an affront to human dignity.
Lady Justice Kazaarwe noted that the visit marked the fourth day of the Association’s ongoing campaign and said encouraging results were already being registered, including an increase in membership subscriptions.
She explained that IAWJ-UC, as a Non-Governmental Organisation, operates within the country’s national development framework. Adding that it is working towards developing a coordinated national approach to implementing its mandate.
During the engagement, Lady Justice Kazaarwe expressed appreciation to the Judiciary Administration and the Permanent Secretary/Secretary to the Judiciary for allocating IAWJ-UC office space at Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court.
She said the office would provide the Association with an identifiable operational base and facilitate the coordination and implementation of its activities.
Lady Justice Kazaarwe also thanked the Chief Magistrate in charge of Nakawa Court, HW Allan Gakyaro Mpirirwe, and the entire court team for their hospitality.
She encouraged judicial officers to join and actively participate in the Association’s activities, emphasising that membership of IAWJ-UC is not restricted to female judicial officers.
The courtesy visit forms part of the Association’s broader efforts to increase its visibility and membership while mobilising judicial officers and communities to promote equal access to justice and strengthen the response to sexual and gender-based violence.

The engagement forms part of IAWJ-UC’s wider effort to take the fight against SGBV beyond the courtroom and into families and communities by mobilising influential stakeholders, including faith leaders, to support prevention, awareness and access to justice.
During the meeting, Pastor Kayanja welcomed the initiative and pledged his full support to the campaign, signalling an important partnership with faith-based leadership in extending the Anti-SGBV message to families and communities.
