Today in History: 77 years ago, General Douglas MacArthur met directly with Emperor Hirohito for the first time. The photograph taken at the event was published and said to have shocked many Japanese who had been taught to believe the Emperor was a living god. Still iconic image.

I still follow Carr's advice in 'What is History?' to study the historian before you study the book: the first thing I turn to is the Acknowledgements page, to see where the author comes from, identify friends and mentors; then the Preface, then the notes; finally the book itself
