The 2D/3D distinction that Japanese fans draw is a good one; that's not to say others can't enjoy media how they want, or use it for certain meanings. But the way of seeing is consistent - the debate about race, beauty standards, lolis in anime are the same principle here.
It's fascinating that a large group of Japanese media fans into fictional gay and lesbian relationships get mad if you connect them to real-life things like the sentiment that it's fine to be lesbian or Pride month. I'm not sure we have a clear analogue in the West.
