This 19-year-old shared her story of going blind after showering with contact lenses in the Dominican Republic.

Contaminated tap water containing parasites infected her contact lenses and cornea, causing severe keratitis.

She was initially misdiagnosed and given steroid drops that worsened the infection, leading to complete blindness in both eyes within a week.

Further testing led to a diagnosis of Acanthamoeba infection, a form of amoeba. After intensive anti-parasitic eye drops every 30-60 minutes for 6-12 months, vision has been partially restored in her left eye only.

Acanthamoeba is common in tap water, showers, pools, and lakes worldwide. Avoid washing or exposing contact lenses to tap water as this can potentially lead to blindness.
