President Tinubu (@officialABAT)'s office released what it "claims" is a letter from President @realDonaldTrump. The letter is dated July 6, 2026. Today is July 22, 2026. The purported letter is a full 16 days old. Why is President Tinubu releasing an old letter now? Nigerians and the world should ask that question. It seems that, with longstanding drug trafficking allegations concerning President Tinubu now before members of the @WhiteHouse and Congress, Tinubu is trying to convince Nigerians that President #Trump personally respects and endorses him.

We are half expecting the @WhiteHouse to tell us that the letter is a fabrication and that no such letter was sent, but the "purported letter" speaks for itself. There is no image of the actual document, only quotations from it. Something does not add up. Even if the letter is genuine and exists, it reads like a standard boilerplate diplomatic response prepared by White House staff in reply to correspondence from a foreign head of state. Hundreds of similar diplomatic letters are sent every month.

We intend to forward the purported quotations from this "unreleased letter" to our friends at the White House. We believe they will not take lightly any attempt by President #Tinubu to use this purported diplomatic letter to suggest that President Trump condones the longstanding heroin trafficking allegations concerning President #Tinubu. For the record, President #Trump has no tolerance for drug traffickers.

James Onanefe Ibori was one of those 1999 Governors that was to get rid of after his tenure, so his prosecution didn't waste time at all.

Fortunately, his prosecution later turned out to be one of the most outstanding landmark decisions of the court.

Let me tell you the interesting story.

On December 13, 2007, the EFCC arrested and arraigned James Ibori, who was just bowing out as a former Governor of Delta State.

Ibori was not just arraigned alone.

He was arraigned alongside two other individuals and three corporate entities before the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna on a 103-count charge.

What did he do exactly?

According to the EFCC, Ibori corruptly enriched himself as a Governor, abused his office, and laundered Delta State treasury.

But then, something very interesting happened.

Ibori's legal team came to the Kaduna Federal High Court and advanced one of the most interesting arguments.

According to Ibori, he acknowledged that the EFCC had the power to try the offences he had been accused of.

However, the alleged crimes were committed exclusively while Ibori was serving as Governor in Delta State, which is located over 700 kilometres away from Kaduna State.

They pointed out that all the witnesses, banks, state records, and government instruments required for a fair trial were located in Delta State.

Hence, forcing them to defend themselves in Kaduna by the EFCC violated their constitutional right to a fair hearing due to the sheer logistical oppression.

But they didn't stop the argument there.

They convinced the court that an attempt to try them in Kaduna instead of Delta State amounted to Forum Shopping.

Now you will ask; what is Forum Shopping?

Forum shopping is the practice of deliberately choosing a specific court, judge, or jurisdiction to file a lawsuit or criminal charge because one party believes it will yield a more favourable outcome.

So in totality, they requested that the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Lawal Shuaibu, should recuse himself and transfer the case to the Asaba Judicial Division of the Federal High Court, Delta State, where the alleged offences occurred.

The EFCC, on the other hand, argued that by virtue of Sections 250 and 251 of the Constitution, the Federal High Court is statutorily a single court across Nigeria, and that territorial placement is merely administrative, not jurisdictional.

The EFCC convinced the court that they chose Kaduna out of security considerations because if Ibori and others were allowed to be tried in Delta State, where he was highly influential as an immediate former Governor, he could interfere with the justice of the case.

The trial court listened to the arguments and refused to transfer the case.

So Ibori's team appealed to the Court of Appeal.

When the three-man panel of the Court of Appeal led by Baba Alkali Ba’aba finally got to hear the case, it chose the argument of Ibori's team.

According to Justice Amina Adamu Augie, who read the lead judgment, she held that although the Federal High Court has one jurisdiction across Nigeria, its Judicial Divisions exist to bring justice closer to the people and prevent institutional oppression.

Hence, failing to respect boundaries transforms prosecution into victimization.

The court explained that money laundering and corrupt enrichment as a Governor are localized crimes, and since all the evidence, witnesses, and impact were in Delta State, there should be no reason Ibori should be tried in Kaduna.

So, in the end, the Court ordered the EFCC to institute the case in Delta State.

That case later became one of the leading authorities on territorial jurisdiction whenever a crime is committed and the need to try people where they committed the crime.

It is cited by lawyers today as Ibori v. FRN (2009) 3 NWLR (Pt. 1128) 247.

Most people in Northern Nigeria are gaslighting Kwankwaso because he chose Obi, but what they don't know is that, win or lose, Kwankwaso may actually be the biggest beneficiary of this whole alignment.

If and when the OK Movement succeeds in 2027, Kwankwaso will be just one step closer to becoming President as Vice to Obi.

By then, his popularity, coupled with the power of incumbency, will have significantly boosted his chances.

On the other hand, if the vision doesn't come through as planned, then in 2031, he can confidently say that he supported a Southerner in 2027 to complete their turn.

It seems someone must have told Atiku Abubakar that the greatest thing President Tinubu fears is the interference of a foreign power like the United States. Hence, he is doing everything possible to make that interference happen.

Well, I commend him.

I only hope the person who told him that also told him something else: that even if free and fair elections eventually happen, he may not necessarily be the beneficiary.

At least, if his efforts help to create an atmosphere where Nigerians can truly choose their leaders without interference, intimidation, or manipulation, he may just be paving the way for Peter Obi, who clearly has the people on his side, to always do the needful.

Strengthening Development Through Partnership

Yesterday, I met with the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Patrick Egloff, and we had a productive and engaging discussion on our country’s developmental journey, with particular emphasis on the critical sectors that drive development: education, healthcare, and lifting people out of poverty.

I expressed my gratitude for the invaluable contributions of the Swiss Confederation to Nigeria’s development, especially its support for critical economic, cultural, humanitarian, and peace-building initiatives, particularly in the North-East.

Building stronger partnerships founded on shared values and a commitment to human development remains essential to creating a more prosperous and inclusive Nigeria.

I just randomly thought about how the Government of Lagos State once wanted to abolish all private schools in Lagos State and how it later turned out to be one of the landmark cases we have today.

Let me tell you the interesting story.

In 1979, when Nigeria transitioned to a Presidential system of Government, in Lagos State, Lateef Jakande won the Governorship election under the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).

One of the core manifestos of Governor Jakande and his party while campaigning was the immediate implementation of free, universal education across the state.

To achieve that objective, as well as create a fully uniform and state-managed educational system, the Lagos State Ministry of Education issued a circular letter dated March 26, 1980.

What was the circular all about?

The circular stated that all private primary schools in Lagos State were to be abolished and that no new private primary or secondary schools would be permitted to open anymore.

The circular didn't end there.

It also stated that primary education would become an absolute economic and social monopoly of the state government.

That circular was supposed to take effect on September 1, 1980.

But before then, something very interesting happened.

The policy sparked immediate backlash from religious bodies, private school proprietors, and parents who felt their moral, religious, and academic choices were being stripped away.

Without wasting the next ticking of the clock, a man called Archbishop Anthony Olubunmi Okogie, who was a Catholic Bishop in Lagos, mobilized trustees of private schools and concerned parents.

They briefed FRA Williams to approach the Lagos State High Court for the enforcement of their Fundamental Rights.

Chief FRA Williams argued before Hon. Justice Agbaje that Section 36 of the 1979 Constitution, which is equivalent to Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution, guaranteed every person the right to freedom of expression, including the right to own, establish, and operate any medium for the dissemination of information, ideas, and opinions.

He convinced the court that a school is a primary "medium" for imparting ideas and knowledge.

And that parents have a fundamental right to determine the religious and moral upbringing of their children, which includes selecting an appropriate private or religious school over state-run institutions.

The Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr. Sanu Sobowale, who appeared on behalf of the State, argued otherwise.

He argued that under Chapter 2 of the 1979 Constitution, precisely Section 18, the state was constitutionally mandated to provide free, equal, and uniform education to all citizens.

He further argued that to effectively execute the provisions of Chapter 2 of the Constitution, the government had the legislative authority to regulate, control, and take over the educational sector to ensure equal opportunities and eradicate illiteracy.

When Justice Agbaje heard the outstanding arguments, he referred the matter to the Court of Appeal.

At the Court of Appeal, Justice Mamman Nasir, who read the lead judgment, listened to both outstanding arguments and chose to side with the FRA Williams team.

According to the court, a school is explicitly a "medium" through which information, ideas, and moral values are imparted to children. Therefore, preventing a citizen from running a school directly infringes upon their freedom of expression.

The court held that the Chapter 2 of the Constitution is a non-justiciable Chapter. That is to say, it is not enforceable in any court.

As such, the government cannot implement the non-justiciable social objectives of Chapter 2 by crushing or invalidating the fully justiciable, legally binding fundamental rights protected in Chapter 4 of the Constitution.

The court finally came to the conclusion that the state can build as many free public schools as it wishes, but it cannot outlaw private citizens from running competing institutions.
