We, as students of Dr Manmohan Singh, will deeply miss his warmth & affection.

The photo below, at Delhi School of Econ (1969), demonstrates Dr Singh’s humility. While Professors were seated in chairs, he quietly came & stood among students. (Circles : Prof Amartya Sen, Dr Singh - I was there as outgoing President of Fraternity)

Ironically, standing next to Dr Singh on his left was Vinod Rai.
Over 40 years later, Vinod’s Report, as CAG of India, created a storm against Dr Singh & his Govt, (2G & Coal ‘scams’),contributing to its downfall & the ascendency of Shri Narendra Modi in 2014.
But in 2015, Supreme Court stayed the prosecution of Dr Singh on the coal matter, saying that there was “not a whiff, let alone an allegation of quid pro quo..”. It was too late !!
In 2017, CBI Court dismissed the charges on 2G, saying “some people created a scam by artfully arranging a few selected facts..”. Too late !
In 2021, Vinod apologised unconditionally in Court on a related matter. At that point the opposition called Vinod’s Report of 2012 a conspiracy to oust Dr Singh’s Govt. Too late !!
A 54 year old picture (that Vinod had kindly sent me some years ago!) is worth a 1000 words…

मैं 2004 से लगभग तीन साल उनका बॉडी गार्ड रहा। एसपीजी में पीएम की सुरक्षा का सबसे अंदरुनी घेरा होता है - क्लोज़ प्रोटेक्शन टीम जिसका नेतृत्व करने का अवसर मुझे मिला था। एआईजी सीपीटी वो व्यक्ति है जो पीएम से कभी भी दूर नहीं रह सकता। यदि एक ही बॉडी गार्ड रह सकता है तो साथ यह बंदा होगा। ऐसे में उनके साथ उनकी परछाई की तरह साथ रहने की जिम्मेदारी थी मेरी।

डॉ साहब की अपनी एक ही कार थी - मारुति 800, जो पीएम हाउस में चमचमाती काली बीएमडब्ल्यू के पीछे खड़ी रहती थी। मनमोहन सिंह जी बार-बार मुझे कहते- असीम, मुझे इस कार में चलना पसंद नहीं, मेरी गड्डी तो यह है (मारुति)। मैं समझाता कि सर यह गाड़ी आपके ऐश्वर्य के लिए नहीं है, इसके सिक्योरिटी फीचर्स ऐसे हैं जिसके लिए एसपीजी ने इसे लिया है। लेकिन जब कारकेड मारुति के सामने से निकलता तो वे हमेशा मन भर उसे देखते। जैसे संकल्प दोहरा रहे हो कि मैं मिडिल क्लास व्यक्ति हूं और आम आदमी की चिंता करना मेरा काम है। करोड़ों की गाड़ी पीएम की है, मेरी तो यह मारुति है।

The demise of #ManmohanSingh ji who (looking back) presided over India’s actual ‘Acchey Din’ feels like the end of an era when India was actually (more) democratic , when Indians were free(er) of fear & intolerance and when Indian public discourse had more decency. Farewell Dr. Singh. You gave India more than you got credit for. 💙🙏🏽

In 2005, Manmohan Singh faced black flags in JNU as a protest against his economic policies. It became a big news. The admin immediately sent notices to students. The very next day, PMO intervened & asked the admin not to take any action as protest was students' democratic right.
