Crazy Eddie Memoirs: My cousin Eddie Antar recognized that white-collar crime required skill and intellect. He paid me to go to college and obtain a CPA license to help the family commit more sophisticated crimes in the future, such as money laundering and securities fraud. We were successful for almost two decades, until an investor group took over Crazy Eddie in a hostile proxy fight, because they believed our phony numbers. We were a victim of our own success at cooking the books. Today, any schmuck can do white-collar crime and defraud their victims for billions of dollars, because the chance of being caught are slim. The Feds are prosecuting about 50% less white-collar crimes than when I was a criminal in 1986. #DeFraudCon2023

Crazy Eddie Memoirs: I had the pleasure of having lunch with the lead FBI investigator in the Crazy Eddie case, while we were attending a crime conference in Atlanta, a few years ago. I asked him, “What was the one thing I did that pissed him off the most?” He responded, “It was mixing up an entire warehouse of documents, because we were forced to sort through everything to find nothing.” I felt guilty and picked up the tab. When it comes to fraud, the distraction is more effective than the lie. I’ll have more to say at #DefraudCon2023, December 1, in Miami. Do not expect a lesson in ethics. I teach how your ethics makes you vulnerable to crime, because criminals do not impose such constraints on their own behavior.
