The Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sohail Afridi, along with the entire provincial cabinet, parliamentary leadership, members of National Assembly and members of the Punjab assembly was heading toward Adiala Jail to stand in solidarity with their leader, Imran Khan.

For the past seven months, Imran Khan has been unlawfully subjected to solitary confinement in prison, isolated from his family, denied basic rights, and deliberately cut off from the people of Pakistan. For the last eight months, he has also been denied proper medical treatment despite repeated concerns regarding his health. These actions are not only inhumane, but a blatant violation of constitutional, legal, and fundamental human rights.

After exhausting every democratic and legal avenue, we are left with no choice but to exercise our constitutional right to peaceful assembly in order to raise our voice against this illegitimate, stolen-mandate government and its continued political victimization of Pakistan’s most popular leader.

Our gathering point was nearly one kilometer away from Adiala Jail. Yet despite this peaceful and lawful intention, the police moved to block Imran Khan’s family, the elected representatives of the people, the entire Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet, and the sitting Chief Minister immediately after they exited the motorway en route to Adiala through Rawalpindi. The blocking of an elected Chief Minister and his cabinet is not just an attack on one political party, it is an attack on democracy itself, an insult to the mandate of millions of Pakistanis.

Let's get the facts straight.

Trump didn't call Shehbaz. He called Munir. The New York Times confirmed Trump made two calls before announcing the ceasefire: one to Netanyahu, one to Munir. Not the Prime Minister. The army chief.

Trump called Munir "my favourite field marshal." Iran's foreign minister thanked "Field Marshal Munir" by name. The South China Morning Post called Munir "the most powerful man in the country." The Lowy Institute called him Pakistan's "de facto ruler." CNN said Munir "has reportedly developed warm rapport" with Trump directly.

The 27th Amendment — passed under Sharif's government — concentrated foreign policy authority in the Chief of Defence Forces office. That's Munir's office. Ayesha Siddiqa said it "does not constitute martial law but in effect represents an even more direct form of military rule."

Sharif posted on X. Munir worked the phones.

As for "nobody contacted Imran Khan during the Afghanistan withdrawal" — that's the same establishment that later jailed him, rigged elections against his party, and had US congressmen introduce a sanctions bill against Munir for "persecuting political opponents." The same Khan who was removed after the no-confidence vote that he publicly alleged involved US interference — a claim the Intercept's leaked cable appeared to support.

The world isn't praising Shehbaz Sharif. It's praising Pakistan. And the person running Pakistan isn't the man posting tweets. It's the man making the calls.

Sharif is the face. Munir is the hand. And the people celebrating don't seem to mind that the hand belongs to a man who locked up the country's most popular leader to make sure he'd never have to share the stage.
