Europe’s summer charm offensive has failed.

Let’s review European diplomatic achievements so far this year. 2025 started with JD Vance making his famous “stepping up” speech in Munich, and alarm bells started ringing.

Unfortunately — Europe didn’t even wake up, let alone step up.

Europe instead based its summer security strategy on three pillars:

1. Appeasing President Trump.
This pillar can be summarised as paying and praying — paying with tariffs and promises of equipment purchases and worshipping Trump with pilgrimages to DC, video calls and public declarations of devotion.

2. Hoping that Putin will be satisfied with what he currently has.
This has been expressed in announcements by European leaders suggesting that brutal realities might force Ukraine to cede territories to Putin, using Baltic or Finnish historical examples. Nothing points to Putin being satisfied with that, but ok, hope springs eternal.

3. Praying that Ukrainians will not get tired
An essential component of the European inaction plan is that Ukrainians will continue fighting for both Ukraine and Europe, while Europe finishes its Aperol spritz and figures things out.

Now what?

When the United States announced the cancellation of the Baltic Security Initiative, many were shocked. I was more shocked at how much time we wasted praying that things would magically improve, rather than heeding the warnings and making preparations for this inevitable scenario.

So now what? Now we have to prepare for a reduction of US troops in Europe, likely in very significant numbers. And yes, it is possible that troops will be withdrawn from the Baltic region. What else should we be prepared for? Simply what has already been said: Ukraine will most likely be left without US assistance. Russia will no longer be sanctioned because of changes in US strategic calculations. Europe will have to face the Russian threat on its own. And frontline countries will have to figure out a plan B, to resist and win in a post-American Europe.

This should not come as a surprise, because we were warned long ago. If we wasted time, that’s on us. As the saying goes: The best times to stop wasting time are ten years ago, and today.

And if there is a question about how this should look in practice — look no further than Ukraine. President Zelenskyy might be saying many thank yous, wearing a suit and solemnly praising the American administration, but… at the same time, Ukraine has launched its biggest air raids on Russian oil refineries, reducing oil output by about 20 percent.

Europe is simply increasing the volume of its rhetoric as two of the three pillars of its 2025 strategy crumble. Meanwhile, Ukraine is introducing new weapons that will strengthen its position even further. Ukraine is talking softly AND developing a range of new sticks. Of course, Ukrainians would rather fight alongside Americans and Europeans, but even if Europeans and Americans are unwilling — Ukrainians are showing what they can achieve on their own.

Time to be brave like Ukraine

Europe, which has lost its belief in its own ability to fight any war, should be inspired by Ukraine and follow her shining example. If a country of fewer than 40 million people can keep stepping up further, even after three years of war, surely similar progress could be made by pooling the wealth of the EU’s 450 million inhabitants?

Europe might not be able to offer Ukraine airtight security guarantees without the US, but we can take frozen assets, close the skies and bring Ukraine into the EU, if we want. That's how I interpret the words "stand with Ukraine", and I think Putin would start thinking twice.

The Baltic States were abandoned to Kremlin occupation after WWII and brutally suppressed for 60 years before finally regaining independence by sacrificing blood, with no help from the West. @SecGenNATO's casual talk of "de facto occupation" is therefore ignorant and terrifying.

If Ukraine has no choice but to accept “de facto” occupation — that’s because WE failed.

Not because Ukrainians failed, not because some mysterious “shit happened”, but because for years we ignored all the warnings, repeated all the mistakes of history, kicked the can down the road and refused to do what it takes to defend the rules and principles that enable sustainable peace and prosperity. This is on us.

We are the architects of this de facto defeat, so now we are trying to pretend it came out of nowhere and we did the best we could to stop it. In a spectacular display of unbombed westsplaining, Mark Rutte is suggesting that everything will be OK in the long run, like it was OK in the Baltic States after decades of de facto occupation by jolly old Uncle Joe Stalin.

Well, I have shrugged off a lot of dumb hot takes about my country over the last few years, but this one is literally sickening. Rutte is revealing that the latest genius 5D chess move to save Ukraine is to casually throw millions of people into a black hole of oppression, torture, rape, kidnapping, murder and destruction of national identity — “de facto, but not de jure”.

And the proponents of this plan will keep a straight face while they cite the misery of the occupation of the Baltic States as a shining example that Ukraine should happily walk into.

In his FT column, Gideon Rachman says little to fill the gap in Rutte’s world view:
"The Soviet Union’s annexation of the Baltic states after 1940 was never legally recognised by the US and most European countries. But it was a fact of life, until, eventually, the Baltic states regained their independence."

Yikes, let’s unpack that.
The occupation wasn’t “a fact of life”, it was a fact of death.
“Eventually” was after decades of deportations, killing, grinding terror and violent attempts to turn everybody into russians.
“Regained their independence” was being crushed under Gorbachev’s tanks while western leaders pleaded with us to give up our fight for freedom.

So… this is the path to peace we are supposed to offer to Ukraine with a smile? These are the glorious new security guarantees that will erase the shame of the Budapest Agreement and allow Ukrainians to have faith in the future?

There are even US Ambassadors talking about how countries can “earn” certain territories and therefore presumably “deserve” them. Would it be paranoid of me to wonder if we just opened the door for Russia to “earn” Narva and Vilnius “de facto”?

He enjoys bathing in blood and watching the misery, death, and destruction delivered by his hand, at his own will.

He has all the money in the world, everything a human being can possibly have.

So war is his ultimate pleasure—it gives him purpose, strokes his wretched ego, lets him imagine himself the new Stalin, and enables him to sow pain simply because he can, sadistically.

It relieves his daily boredom amid infinite luxury and gives him a thrill from the safety of his bunker, at the expense of millions.

He enjoys being begged for peace, making the entire media world wait for a word from him until long after midnight—only to say nothing.

He enjoys spitting in the faces of world leaders through his petty, theatrical stunts: ignoring the Brazilian president’s visit, derailing the Istanbul talks, or making Steve Witkoff wait for hours outside his door, or wiping out an entire city block in Ukraine in the night, just because he can.

He doesn’t care whether he wins in the end or whether this war, with its absurdly disproportionate costs, makes any sense at all.

Putin is a small, insecure, immoral man who has found a new toy in waging the largest European bloodbath since World War II.

And he remains safe and unpunished while doing it.

Of course he won’t stop—his petty lust for power and sadism is far too pleased by what’s happening.
