Welcome new followers!
We are launching soon and invite you to join us.
When our contributors reflected on the values reflected in their work and the meaning our shared principles hold, this was the result:
In 2023, Illinois can stop responding to gun violence with failed criminal penalties and can chart a new course toward a stronger, healthier, happier state.
It's time to have this conversation.
To reduce gun violence, we must do something different and real, stop soothing ourselves with failed tools, and address causes head-on.

There is another way. We can reduce the harms of gun violence, racism, and criminalization at the same time. Our office supports the recommendations put forth by the Illinois Blueprint for Peace https://t.co/aWnAd7QTo7
Not only is there a racist pattern of enforcement of gun laws in Chicago. Traffic stops, searches and gun arrests are being underreported, making oversight impossible. https://t.co/IKJIjLnJbH
We know there is a better way. Our office supports the recommendations put out recently by the Illinois Blueprint for Peace. Our state can reduce the harms of gun violence, racism, and criminalization at the same time. https://t.co/dd51XGTsc0
Gun possession prosecutions have failed to significantly reduce the demand for guns in our city. They clog up the courts. They haven’t stopped mass shootings. And the racist pattern of selective enforcement exacerbates already terrible community relations with law enforcement.
Assistant Public Defenders Margaret Armalas and Megan Tomlinson speak out about a troubling pattern they see in their work in Chicago: racist enforcement of gun possession laws. https://t.co/3X19TJrLwY
Some recs may seem surprising or challenging. They focus on reducing and repairing harm (and rejecting the political tactic of dodging social/institutional problems).
But if we don't keep that focus: the end result of every violent act will be even more guns and more violence.
To reduce gun violence, we must do something different and real, stop soothing ourselves with failed tools, and address causes head-on.
