The federal indictment of former Chicago Housing Authority Director Ryan Ross and construction company owner Vanessa Rhodes raises serious questions about oversight, contracting, and accountability at CHA.

Federal prosecutors allege Ross received more than $421,000 in kickbacks in exchange for steering more than $4.8 million in CHA work to companies connected to Rhodes.

The allegations have many Chicagoans asking a broader question:

How many other contracting relationships throughout Chicago government deserve closer scrutiny?

Chicago Flips Red believes the public deserves transparency regarding the relationship between former Alderman Walter Burnett Jr., developers operating in and around the 27th Ward, and entities that have received public housing-related opportunities.

It is a matter of public record that Burnett was considered for the position of CHA CEO. Public reports also show that concerns were raised regarding potential conflicts of interest and his relationships with private developers during that process.

Chicago Flips Red is calling for a full review of:

• CHA contracting practices• Developer relationships connected to CHA projects• Political influence in housing decisions• The appointment process for major public housing leadership positions

The Ryan Ross indictment demonstrates that oversight matters.

The question now is whether investigators and watchdog agencies will examine other relationships involving public housing, development, and political influence with the same level of scrutiny.
